In a generator in which a furnace atmosphere gas is prepared by burning an air/gas mixture supplied by a burner 15 to a chamber 11 containing an oxidation catalyst 24, the temperature in said chamber is controlled by recirculating part of the atmosphere gas leaving a cooler 30 through pipe 35, a sediment trap 36, and pipes 38, 41 and 47 back to the chamber 11. Compressed air is fed through a pipe 20 to a venturi 18 supplied with gas through a pipe 22 under control of a regulator 21 subject to the pressure in the pipe 17 supplying the air/gas mixture to the burner 15. The supply of recirculated gases is under control of a regulator 40 subject to the pressure in pipe 17, and the supply line incorporates an orifice plate 42, a check valve 45 preventing back pressure, and a valve 44. The cooler 30 has a water spray 31, an overflow 29, and a recirculation system for the water wherein the latter is itself cooled in a heat exchanger 33. The generator may be operated automatically to produce rich, operating gas or lean, purging gas alternatively, in which case a by-pass line 50 having a valve 52 and an orifice plate 51 is provided. Valves 43, 44 and 52 are then relay or motor operated under control of a single electric switch 53. Orifice plate 42 or both orifice plates 42 and 51 may be replaced by motor-operated valves operated in accordance with the generator temperature.
