Abstract
1328294 Treating I.C. engine charge O B LINDSTROM 27 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 11580/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division C5] A combustion engine 5 is supplied with fuel from a tank 4 via a reforming reactor 1 containing a catalyst, e. g. noble metals and transition metals on ceramic supports, and operating at a temperature between 200 and 1, 000‹C so that at least part of the fuel is converted to hydrogen and carbon monoxide by reaction with steam. Between 5 and 50% of the engine exhaust gases and possibly water from the tank 15 are also supplied to the reactor 1. The air supply to the engine through a line 12 and an air supply to the reactor through a line 13 are heated by respective exhaust gas heat exchangers 10 and 11 upstream of a silencer 19. The flows of fuel, exhaust gas, air and water to the reactor 1 are controlled by respective devices 3, 9, 14 and 17 operated by pulses from an electronic control in accordance with engine operation and the reactor state. The products from the reactor may be cooled before delivery to the engine. The fuel may be methanol, ethyl alcohol or petroleum fractions. The reactor may include catalysts to promote the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The reactor may be heated, particularly at engine starting, by combustion gases from a burner delivered to the reactor, disposition of the reactor in a surrounding combustion chamber or tubes or electric heating elements in the reactor. The reactor may have multi-layer heat insulation. The engine may be started using a conventional fuel supply.
