A domestic fireplace installation comprises a conduit located beneath the firehearth and in communication at its end distant from the fireplace with the space beneath the floor of the room in which the installation is fitted, said conduit having an outlet located at the rear of the fireplace above the level of the firehearth and beneath the grate and an outlet located in front of the fret of the fire, a draught generating device located in said conduit, and valve mechanism within said conduit such that the flow of air through said outlets may be controlled as desired. As shown a tapering inclined conduit 10 is located beneath the hearth air from the space beneath the floor 11 being blown by a fan 21 either to the space beneath the grate 13 through casing 12 and opening 14 or through an outlet 18 in the conduit to the front of, the fret 20 depending upon the setting of the Y- shaped valve mechanism fitted in the conduit. The valve mechanism comprises upper plates 23, 24, and lower plate 25, plates 23, 25 being formed with openings 27, 28 respectively, closable by hinged plates 29, 30 respectively. A hinged grilled plate 33 is provided at hearth level at the top of a short conduit 19 leading from opening 18 movement of this plate controlling by means of a Bowden cable secured to plate 30 and an arm 31 attached to plate 29 the openings 27, 28 in the valve plates 23, 25 such that when the former is open the latter is closed and vice versa. In a modification, Fig. 4, the casing 12 is extended below the conduit 10 to form a pocket 39 to collect any ash that may accumulate in the conduit. The invention is applicable to domestic hot water boilers.
