Abstract
586,120. Velocity-modulated tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., DAVIES, L. J., RUSHFORTH, L., SINCLAIR, W. D., and MILNER, C. J. Oct. 29, 1941, No. 13949. [Class 39 (i)] In a velocity modulated electron discharge device, the parts of resonator chamber or chambers 2, 3 are constructed and assembled together before insertion'in a metal casing 12, which has extensions such as 14 for attachment of the electron gun 1 and the collecting or reflecting electrode 4 ; where the latter is at the same potential as the resonator chambers it may be attached direct to the casing 12 by a spigot and socket as shown. The resonator chamber or chambers is or are bored from a block of metal ; if with two chambers a central dividing wall 6 is left, which wall has a ring of apertures 6<11> and if desired a loop 11 for coupling the two chambers. End covers 17, 18 are fitted into the block, covers and block having extensions 6<1>, 17<1>, 18<1> to form the gaps 7, 7<1>, the rims of the extensions being of knife-edge form as described in Specification 582,484. The assembled resonators are inserted against a shoulder 13 on the casing which has already attached by a glass extension 16, the electron gun ; this may be of the kind described in Specification 543,920. A screw ring 19 holds the resonator within the casing and then the collector 4 is fixed in place ; the collector may be of the kind described in Specification 586,121 and with the casing is water cooled. An output loop 21<1> projects into the resonator chamber nearest the collector ; there may be three chambers. The shoulder 13 may be at the collector end, in which case the resonator is inserted from the other end of the casing. After assemblage, the metal joints are provided with a brazing metal and the whole device heated to fuse this metal. The device is exhausted through a tube 23 on the electron gun .extension. Locating screws may be used instead of the shoulder 13 to position the resonator.
