Abstract
927,845. Electron microscopes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 10, 1959 [Sept. 13, 1958], No. 30921/59. Class 39 (1). In an electron microscope the object carrier 17 supports the object on a pin 19 in a cooling space defined by walls 22, 23 connected to a metal block 26 at the end of a metal tube 27 having a concentric inner tube 31 which feeds cooling fluid (liquid or gas, e.g. air or nitrogen) to the face of the block 26, the fluid being discharged through a bore 34. In order that the cooling medium does not extract heat from the microscope housing the medium is heated by a heater 44 so that the discharged cooling medium is maintained at ambient temperature. The walls of the cooling chamber may substantially surround the object and the object diaphragm may also be arranged in the cooling chamber being separated from the object by a partition wall which is also cooled.
