Abstract

783,211. Mass spectrometers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 25, 1955 [May 26, 1954], No. 15128/55. Class 39(1). Changes in pressure in the sample reservoir 25 or a mass spectrometer which are due to a temperature difference between the reservoir and the ionization chamber 27 maintained at different temperatures, are minimized by arranging the temperature gradient to fall between the ionization chamber and the leak 29. A part 32 of a heating coil 31 for the sample reservoir extends to the leak. Ionization chamber 27 has a heating coil 36 and a housing 30 provides heat insulated compartments. The proportion between the two heating currents may be kept constant when the absolute coupling values are altered. In an arrangement in which the ionization chamber is heated while the sample reservoir is kept at room temperature, a suitable length of flow tube is provided between the ionization chamber and the leak. The leak may be of the molecular flow type, or of the viscous, fractionating or non-fractionating type. A detailed analysis is given of the effects of thermal transpiration produced by thermal gradients in the gas inlet tube of the spectrometer. Specifications 632,963 and 698,850 are referred to.
