Abstract

1,266,427. Refrigerating. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABBIEKEN N.V. 2 June, 1969 [5 June, 1968], No. 27716/69. Heading F4H. In a helium II system, a superleak and a heater generate a pressure difference across a second superleak to cool a load located at the downstream end of the second superleak. As illustrated, the system is located in a vacuum chamber 14 surrounded by a helium II bath 3 which supplies working medium for the system. An electric heater 11 and a superleak 9 generate a pressure difference across a superleak 2 so that heat is transferred from a load 6 to a cooler 8. The cooler is formed of sintered copper and is in thermally conducting relationship with the bath 3 through a copper plate 13. The apparatus is so proportioned that the helium II exceeds its critical speed in the ducts connecting the system components. A further heater 11<SP>1</SP> may be provided to enable the system to work in the reverse semi and cool a load 6<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the duct 12 is connected to the superleak 2 through a cooler immersed in the bath 3.
