Abstract

1,110,638. Thermoelectric devices. SIEMENS A.G. 1 Feb., 1967 [2 Feb., 1966], No. 4985/67. Heading H1K. A Peltier heat exchanger, particularly of use in the cooling of blood during operations, comprises a strip-shaped throughflow chamber 6, in a block 4, e.g. of a non-corrosive metal, which is thermally in contact with but electrically insulated from the cold junction of a Peltier block 1. The Peltier block 1 may comprise P and N type semi-conductor bodies connected in series electrically, and in parallel thermally. The chamber 6 has polished surfaces, and the transitions from the chamber to the inlet 7 and outlet 8 are preferably shaped so as to conform to the flow lines within the chamber 6. A detachable cover 5 may be provided, and if required the whole chamber may be detachable. As shown cooling fins 10 and a fan 11 are provided at the hot junction, but these may be replaced by a further chamber (6<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3 (not shown), similar to the chamber (6), in which the blood may be re-heated before returning to the body. Regulating means to adjust the blood temperature may also be provided.
