618,816. Refrigerating; heat-exchangers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 11, 1946, No. 33437. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1945. [Classes 29, 64(ii), and 64(iii)] A refrigerating apparatus comprises an insulated cabinet 10 with low and high temperature compartments 14, 16 a primary refrigerant circuit including a primary evaporator 26, one portion of which cools the low temperature compartment, and a secondary refrigerant circuit having an evaporative portion 29 which cools the high temperature compartment. Further, a condensive portion 31 of the secondary circuit is located adjacent the other portion 32 of the primary evaporator 26 in a variable heat exchanger 33 which includes an intermediate chamber 35 (see Fig. 3) communicating with a liquid container 41, the arrangement being such that, dependent on a reference temperature e.g. that obtaining outside the cabinet or that of the high temperature compartment 16, a heat-transmitting liquid is caused to flow into the chamber 35 from the container or in the opposite manner, to increase or decrease the exchange of heat. The heattransmitting liquid may be glycerine or trichlorotrifluoro-ethane and may be displaced from the container 41 by vapour released from adsorbent material 44 such as activated charcoal, by a bellows (not shown) in the container, or by direct expansion of the liquid. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the heat exchanger has an inclined section to increase the heat exchange surface and sensitivity, and the liquid level in the intermediate chamber 35 depends upon the balance of vapour pressures above the liquid surfaces in the chamber and container.
