Abstract
585,324. Metal-to-glass seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. Feb. 21, 1945, No. 4408. [Class 36] A method of making a terminal member for a vacuum or other electrical device, such as a condenser or transformer, having conductors 2 secured by glass-to-metal seals consists in pre-forming the seals in one or more rows in a strip of metal 1 from which the separate members with the requisite number of seals are cut. The strip may be formed of suitable alloys, such as nickel-iron-cobalt of the kind described in Specification 358,934, [Group XI]; or, flanged eyelets of such alloys may be welded &c. to an ordinary metal strip at the actual seal-locations. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the conductors may be positioned through punched-up eyelets in the strip by a jig 4, small glass tubes 5 threaded on the conductors being subsequently fused to produce the seals (Fig. 3). In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the strip 1 is formed with a groove 7, continuous or otherwise, and the conductors 2 are assembled between pairs of glass rods 8 which are then fused to effect the seal.
