Abstract

539,076. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd. (Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen-Fabrik Ges.). March 18, 1940, No. 5043. [Class 100 (iii)] Assembling and clamping matrices. Common adjusting-means are provided for the assemblerslide and the vice-jaws, to determine the length of the line, and means operated from the machine are provided for returning the long finger of . the line-delivery carriage and the matrix-line stop on the first elevator to their original positions. The left-hand vice-jaw 24, Fig. 1, is, as usual, adjusted for the length of line required by means of a slidable rack-bar 25 engaged by a spring pawl, which is releasable by means of a hand-lever 27. A slidable rod 29, fastened to the jaw-adjusting means, extends past the assembler-slide 1 and carries a stop 33, which is adapted to be engaged by an adjustable stop-screw 35 carried by an abutment 34 mounted on the assembler-slide. A detent 37, pivoted on the stop 33, permits a small additional movement of the assembler-slide for the introduction of a last matrix. The rod 29 is in two parts, which are connected by the engagement of a pin on one part in an aperture in the other, so as to form a disengageable coupling and permit the left-hand part of the rod to be swung downwards with the vice-frame. On the rise of the assembler after composition is completed, a pin 5, Fig. 2, carried thereby rocks a lever 6, which operates a releasing-pawl 7, so that the long finger 8 of the line-delivery carriage is released and is moved by a spring into contact with the end of the composed line. After the delivery of the line, the carriage is returned to the right by a lever 17 and a cam 21, and the long finger is arrested by the pawl 7 and so returned to its original position. The line-stop 12 in the first elevator, which is pushed back by the entering line, is returned to its initial position, when the elevator has risen towards the distributer, by a pusher 13 connected to the matrixtransfer slide.
