Abstract
549,568. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. March 3, 1942. No. 2804. Convention date, July 10, 1941. [Class 100 (iii)] Assembling matrices. To prevent the leading matrix of a line from falling over during the rise of the assembler, it is frictionally supported by a pivoted gate 22, which extends along the front of the assembler, and is held'out of action during composition of the line, but moves rearwardly to engage the leading matrix when the assembler rises. The inner wall of the gate is tapered, so that it approaches more nearly to the opposite wall of the assembler as the distance from the entrance end increases. In the lower position of the assembler, the gate is held forwardly by a fixed cam-plate 32 against the pressure of a spring 34. When the assembler rises, the gate escapes from the cam-plate and is pressed against the upper ear of the leading matrix, which is thereby supported independently of the position of the long finger of the line-delivery slide.
