Abstract
447,061. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., 9, Kingsway, and AYNGE, W. E., Glyneva,Sydenham Park Road, Upper Sydenham, both in London. Nov. 8, 1934, No. 32111. [Class 100 (iii)] Assembling matrices.-A, hand composing- stick is adapted for the insertion of a line of hand-composed matrices into the assembler elevator, so as to be controlled by the normal operations of the machine. The stick comprises a flanged matrix-supporting shelf 1, Figs. 1 and 2, on which the matrices are assembled between a clamping-abutment 2 and an abutment 3, which is adjustable by means of a catch engaging in notches in the flange 5 of the shelf. The abutment 2 is carried by a slide 11, and is movable inwards in order to clamp the line. A lug 12 on the slide 11 co-operates with a fixed lug 14 to form a finger-and-thumb grip, by means of which the stick may be handled and the line clamped and released. The lugs 12, 14 are separated by a spring 16, which normally holds the abutment 2 in the outer position. When a line has been assembled, the stick is inverted and placed against the assembler, the hinged front gate of which is lowered. The clamping-abutment 2 is then released, and the matrices are permitted to fall into the assembler. After the casting, the line is restored to the stick from the second elevator, which is arrested in an intermediate position. In a modification, adapted for use with lines containing spacebands, a slightly narrower shelf 33, Fig. 6, is spring-supported over the shelf 1, so as to form a gap 39 between it and the flange 5, in which the ears of the spacebands are accommodated. Pressure of the stick against the assembler depresses the shelf 33, so that the spacebands are released.
