[Class 100 (iii)] Distributing matrices; spacers.-Non-expansible thin or " hair spacers 31, Fig. 2, which are inserted in the composed line by hand, are provided at their upper ends with lugs 32, 33 corresponding to those of the wedge spacebands Y, so that they are supported on the spaceband supporting-rails during their travel through the machine. The lower front lugs may be omitted, so that the spaces will clear the auxiliary rail used for supporting matrices at the higher level. During the distribution of the line, the hair spaces are supported by their lugs in the line-transfer channel, and, after the removal of the matrices, are pushed along the supporting-rails and. enter the spaceband-box together with the spacebands. The leading spaceband is, as usual, arrested by the frontplate 29, Figs. 3 and 7, of the spaceband-box 13. The supporting-rails 27 in the box are sharply inclined downwards at their lower ends, and the spacebands are urged downwards into contact with them by a fixed depressor-blade 44. The hair spaces, however, are maintained at a higher level by the engagement of teeth 40 thereon with ribs 41 on the usual centre-bar 42 of the spaceband-box. The plate 29 has an opening, which permits the passage of the spaces, but the spacebands, being at a lower level, are retained. Any spaces in front of the foremost spaceband pass through the plate 29 and fall into a receptacle 50. When a spaceband is released, any spaces between it and the following spaceband pass into the receptacle 50. The supporting-teeth 40 of the spaces may be provided at the level of their upper lugs, and the spacebands are in that case cut away, so as not to engage the teeth.
