Abstract
368,181. Type-bar-making machines. HART, H., 9, Kingsway, London.-(Mergenthaler Linotype Co. ; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) July 9, 1931, No. 19731. [Class 100 (iii).] Trimming type-bars; moulds ; matrices.-In order to remove irregularities and high spots from the printing- faces of type-bars, the bars are cast of slightly more than type height, and their printing-faces are trimmed, so as to reduce them to type height. For this purpose, the moulds are made slightly deeper than usual, and the printing-faces are trimmed, as the mould-disc rotates, by a stationary knife J, Fig. 3, which is arranged opposite to the usual back-knife H. On account of the increased depth of the moulds, the type-bars project into the path of the knife J, which clears the type-bars cast in ordinary moulds. The mould-disc is supported during the trimming by a bracket J<1>, Fig. 9, having an adjustable wear-shoe j<3>, which projects behind the disc. A guide-surface j<5> on the bracket fits against the front face of the disc, to support it against displacement by the back-knife. In an alternative method, matrices having formative cavities of slightly greater than normal depth are employed in conjunction with moulds of normal depth. The side-walls of the cavities are made right-angular, instead of bevelled, to the extent of the increase in depth, so that the area of the character faces is not increased by the trimming.
