Matrices for producing type-bars having italic characters are adapted to be presented to the mould in either a vertical or an inclined position, or in different inclined positions. The matrices X, Fig. 6, each bear roman and italic characters, or a number of italic characters of different inclination, and their ears X<5>, X<5> are provided with angularly-related aligning-surfaces x', x<2> for supporting the matrices in either position. The clamping-jaws F. G, Fig. 3, are adjustable to different inclinations, and the justifying-slide K is provided with a laterally movable member to prevent bending of the space-bars, as described in Specification 183,321.
