Abstract

183,284. Hart, H., (Mergenthaler Linotype Co.). May 6, 1921. Type.-In founts of matrices, dies, type, &c. for use in printing Syriac and like languages, the number of characters is greatly reduced by the use of main elements bearing primary characters which may be used alone or in association with appendage characters bearing a primary character extension and an accent or the like. The appendage characters, which comprise an extension a', Fig. 3, and an accent or the like a, are adapted to connect at the left-hand side with the primary characters shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to form a compound accented character, as shown in Fig. 4. The extensions of the appendage characters also serve to connect successive primary characters.
