Type-bars.-The characters 1 of type-bars are formed directly on the edge of the slug body F, instead of on pedestals 3 as heretofore, so that " smutting," or the transfer of ink from the pedestals to the printed sheet, is avoided. This is effected by forming the characters directly in the edges of the matrices instead of at the bottom of routing- notches.
