Abstract

539,908. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. June 24, 1940, No. 10812. Convention date, June 28, 1939. [Class 100 (iii)] Meal-pots; trimming type-bars. Type-bars of ribbed or skeleton form are cast with raised lugs 32, Fig. 2, on the rear face or foot, the lugs being subsequently trimmed off by the back-knife; in order to avoid the effect of any shrinking of'the supporting-ribs 28 during solidification, which would render the ribs of less than type-height, arid would result in tilting of the assembled typebars.. The lugs are formed by horizontal grooves 29; Fig: 5, in the face of the metal-pot mouthpiece 14, the grooves being located above the usual discharge holes 24, through which the metal enters the mould.
