Abstract
351,352. Type-bar-making machines. HART, H., 9, Kingsway, London.-(Mergenthaler Linotype Co.; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 27, 1930, No. 28978. [Classes 100 (ii) and 100 (iii).] Moulds type-bars.-Relates to means for casting thick type-bars adapted for spacing or leading purposes, the thickness of which is such that, if they were cast in a mould of ordinary form, the mould cavity would overlap the upper characters of matrices of which the lower characters are in casting position. The cap of the mould has a relatively fixed rear section 1, Fig. 2, to form the thick part of the slug, and a retractable front section 2, which restricts the width of the mould cavity at the front, so that the type-bar will be of ordinary thickness along its character edge, but of greater thickness towards its foot. The thicker portion of the type-bar may be solid, or may be constituted by spaced ribs Y<3>, Fig. 7, so as to form a recessed or skeleton slug. For the production of a recessed slug, the rear cap-section 1 is formed with grooves 4, Fig. 3, separated by cores 5. If solid slugs are to be produced, the cores 5 are omitted. The front cap-section 2 is mounted to slide vertically on the rear section, and is lifted, :in order to open the mould for ejection of the slug, by bars 10 connected by a cross-bar 11, which carries a roller 16 engaged by a stationary grooved cam on the axis of the mould wheel. The casting face of the front capsection may be plain, or may have inclined grooves at the rear, to form continuations Y4, Fig. 7, of the ribs Y3. Trimming type-bars.-The left-hand trimming knife J<1>, Fig. 6, is set back from the right-hand knife J, so that no trimming of the slug occurs until the spacing ribs reach the right-hand knife, in order to avoid tilting or rocking of the slug. The part J<2> forward of the left-hand knife acts merely as a guide.
