In typographical slug casting machines it has already been proposed to produce slugs which are U-shaped in cross section, the two side walls of the body portion of each slug being connected 5 together by transverse ribs which also support the character bearing portion. To facilitate the ejection of such slugs from the cored mold in which they are cast, the side walls which are formed with parallel outer surfaces have been tapered inwardly, i. e., towards the base of the slug, their inner surfaces being inclined relatively to each other, the core members of the mold being correspondingly shaped.
With the slug and mold of this form, however, there is a tendency for the slug to become tilted during ejection by the action of the ejector blade against the base of one of the side walls, as soon as the slug is moved away from the core members of the mold.
It has been proposed to avoid'a similar difficulty in connection with L-shaped and T-shaped slugs, in which the character bearing portion is supported by transverse ribs connected to a single body portion on which the ejector acts, by providing on the mold core members foot-like projections extending into the transverse character bearing portion of the slug, that is to say, nearly to the front face of the mold, which projections serve to guide the body portion of the slug during ejection. With this arrangement, however, the character bearing portion of the slug must be of sufficient thickness to avoid undue weakening of its connection to the body portion by the recess which the core projections form.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the above-mentioned ejector difficulties while permitting the production of a slug with a character bearing portion of comparatively light construction. To this end the side wall of the U- shaped slug against which the ejector blade operates is of rectangular form and the other side wall thereof is tapered inwardly. Thus the ejection of the slug is not hampered by contraction during solidification and the slug is guided during ejection by the straight surfaces of the mold core members and the mold between which the rectangular side wall of the slug body is cast. Further, the core members may be permitted to extend forwardly close to the front face of the mold to enhance the guiding action and at the same time lighten the construction of the character bearing portion of the slug.
The invention is hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which one constructional form of mold is represented in transverse section, with an adjacent portion of the mold wheel, and a slug in course of ejection from the mold.
Referring to the drawing, 0 is a portion of the mold wheel on which the mold is mounted. The mold comprises a body portion A and a cap portion B, which are spaced apart in known manner by intermediate members or end liners (not shown). Core members C are provided in the mold separated by grooves or recesses extending rearwardly from the front face of the mold so as to produce U-shaped slugs comprising two side Walls S and S a character bearing portion S and ribs S cast in the recess or grooves between the core members.
According to the constructional form of the invention illustrated, each core member C is formed with a surface 0 parallel with the adjacent surface A of the mold body, A, and an opposite surface 0 inclined to the adjacent surface B of the mold cap B, while its front face a is located close to the front face of the mold. With this form of the core members, the abovementioned side wall S of the slug, the foot of which is acted upon by the ejector blade P, is of rectangular form, the side wall S is inwardly tapered and the character bearing portion S is comparatively thin though of adequate strength. It will thus be seen that the surfaces A 0 of the mold and core members serve to guide the rectangular wall S of the slug during practically the whole of the ejecting movement, while the tapered form of the wall S will in known manner assist the separation of slug from the core members.
Having described my invention I declare that What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In or for a typographical slug-casting machine, a mold for casting slugs U-shaped in cross section and comprising a core member located between the side walls of the mold, said core member having one side face parallel with the adjacent side wall of the mold and an opposite side face inclined rearwardly towards the other side wall of the mold.
2. In or for a typographical slug-casting machine, a mold for casting slugs U-shaped in cross section and comprising a core member located between the side walls of the mold, said core member having one side face parallel with the adjacent side wall of the mold, an opposite side face inclined rearwardly towards the other side wall of the mold and a front face terminating close to the front face of the mold.
