Abstract

Clamping, aligning, and justifying matrices; single - type composing and casting machines.- In the production of inclined or italic characters in machines having circulating matrices for casting type-bars, logotypes, or single types the matrices have their characters arranged for alignment in an inclined position of the matrices, as shown in Fig. 9, and means is provided for inclining the matrices prior to casting. To enable the matrices to be aligned in this position, the ears X<2>, X<3>, Fig. 10, of the matrices are formed with inclined surfaces at their inner ends for engagement 'by the rails of the first elevator and the aligning-ledge of the mould. The matrices are assembled in upright position, and are caused to assume an inclined position by means of inclined vice-jaws F, G, Fig. 2, which may be adjusted to an inclined or vertical position as required. Tc prevent damage to the wedge-spacers, the justifying-slide K has a relatively movable member M as the slide rises. The member M is adjustable by hand into and out of operative position.
