Abstract

533,739. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Nov. 20, 1939, No. 30384. Convention date, March 30. [Class 100 (iii)] Justifying matrices. - Means are provided for preventing damage to the spacebands during justification owing to their being driven upwards whilst tilted edgewise in the line. The shorter members of the bands thereby become wedged between the walls of the elevator, and the longer members, which are moved in the direction of the length of the line by the cam effect of the inclined justifying-bar, become bent or broken. The justifying-bar E is formed with a groove F, which closely fits the chamfered lower ends of the spacebands Y' and adjusts them into the vertical position before they are driven up. Alternatively, the bar E may be formed with a bevelled rib, which enters the usual slots in the lower ends of the bands.
