[Class 100 (iii).] Assembling matrices.-A hand composing-stick, in which a matrix line may be assembled and then transferred to the first elevator of the casting-machine, consists of an L-shaped member, one wall 2, Fig. 3, of which serves to align the matrices at their upper ends. To the wall 2 is secured a rail 6, which is adapted to fit into the notches in the upper ends of the matrices and spacebands. A shoulder 7 on the side-wall 1 holds the matrices in engagement with the rail 6, and the part 8 of the wall beyond the shoulder supports the spacebands 9. The stick is closed at one end by a block 12, Fig. 1, having a lip which engages in a groove 10, Fig. 3, in the shoulder 7. The block is adjustably held in place by a lever 17, which engages with a rack 22. At the opposite end of the stick is a gate 23, against which the matrices are pressed during the composing. The gate is carried on a spring arm, and is cammed down when the stick is applied to the elevator, so that the line can be transferred. The wall 2 is extended beyond the side-wall 1, so that it can project into the elevator. When the line is complete, the block 12 is released and is moved to the left, to push the line into the elevator.
