Abstract
375,183. Type-barm a king machines. HART, H., 9, Kingsway, London.-(Mergenthaler Linotype Co. ; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 3, 1931, No. 30430. [Class 100 (iii).] Assembling, clamping, and aligning matrices.- A hand composing stick for holding a line of matrices in casting position, independently of the first elevator, is adapted to be yieldingly held in a fixed frame, such as the vice-frame, and to be moved bodily therein to effect alignment of the matrices. The first elevator A, Fig. 1, is locked out of action in its upper position by means of a pivoted-latch-member P. When the elevator is so held, the vice automatic stop-rod G is operated by a lever D<3> and a shoe a2 on the elevator. The hand composing-stick comprises a bottom wall J<1>, Fig. 9, a side-wall J<2>, and two end-walls J3, J<4>. A matrix retaining-bar J<5>, which is of V-shape in cross section, is hinged to one end-wall, and can be swung over to engage with the V-shaped notches in the upper ends of the matrices, in which position it is held by a spring latch. The stick, which is provided with a handle J<10>, is inserted in the machine between the vicejaws, and is supported by means of lugs J<6> on the end-walls, which rest on the top of the vice-cap D<1>, Fig. 1. The stick is resiliently held down on the vice-cap by a bolt J", which is provided with a handle J<13>, and carries an. arm J<12>, which can be turned under the flange D4 of the vice-cap. A spring surrounding the bolt holds down the stick, which is raised by the justifying-bar E, in order to align the matrices against the aligning-rib on the mould. Prior to the aligning, the left-hand vice-jaw C<1>, shown in plan in Fig. 2, is pressed against the stick by the movement of the known wedgebar O, and the right-hand jaw C<2> is thereby forced against a fixed stop-pin C<3>. The known pump-stop lever Q is at the same time actuated by the jaw C<2> to permit the casting to take place. One end-wall of the stick is yieldingly mounted, so that the movement of the jaw C<1> also clamps the matrices in the stick. A retractable interponent R is provided for insertion between the jaw C<2> and the stop C<3>, to compensate for the thickness of the end-wall of the stick, when the stick is not in use. The matrix-retaining member J<5> may be adapted to engage the upper ears of the matrices. The end-wall of the stick may be rigidly mounted, and the matrices clamped therein by a wedgemember, which is driven upwards by the justifying-bar.
