[Class 100 (iii).] Clamping matrices.-In means for quadding out and centralizing short lines, a single pawl is adapted to impart the clamping movement either to the right-hand jaw or to both jaws, according to whether a line is to be indented at the end only, or is to be centralized. The jaws 2, 3, Fig. 1, have rack-bars 5, 6, which can be connected by a slidably mounted pinion 7 when both jaws are to be moved, and the right-hand jaw 3 has closing mechanism similar to that described in the prior Specification. The rack-bar 6 has on its underside teeth 42, which can be engaged by a pawl 41, mounted so as to move obliquely in a bracket 40, which is carried by one of the rods 37 that support the justifying-bar 39. The pawl 41 is held in raised position by a spring, so that, as the justifying-bar rises, the pawl first engages the teeth 42, and is then forced to the left, carrying the rack-bar 6 and jaw 3 with it, so as to clamp the line. If the pinion 7 is in operative position, both jaws are moved towards each other. In a modification, designed to avoid wide-spacing between words, the bracket 40a, Fig. 5, that supports the pawl 41, is carried by a post 50, which can slide vertically in a guide 52 on the vice-frame. A plunger 55, guided to move horizontally through the bracket 40a, is adapted to be moved by means of a hand-lever 57 into and out of the path of a member 39a attached to the justifying-bar 39. The arrangement is such that, when the plunger 55 is projected the pawl 41 is brought into engagement with the rack-bar 6 before the spacebands have been driven upwards to the full extent. When full-length lines containing spacebands are to be cast from, the plunger 55 is withdrawn, so as to put the pawl out of action, and a pin 61, connected to the lever 57, is simultaneously projected into a recess in the jaw 3 to prevent its movement. To facilitate the quadding of infrequent short lines, a pawl 63, which can be turned out of action, is mounted on the lever 57, so as to be engaged by a pin 64 on the first elevator, and to withdraw the plunger 55 after the casting.
