TYPOGRAPHICAL, SLUG CASTING MACHINE Filed March 17,` 1954 Patented Mar. 24, 1936 TYPOGRAPHICAL SLUG CASTING MACHINE William Fairall Gorse, Altrincham, and Richard Henry Scott, Enfield, England, assignors to Linotype and Machinery Limited, London, England, a company of England Application March 17, 1934, Serial No. 716,114 In Great Britain April 6, 1933 16 Claims.
This invention relates to typographical slug casting machines such as those known commercially under the registered trade-mark Linotype, wherein circulating matrices are composed in line and the composed line presented to a slotted mould for the casting of the type bar or slug, the line, during the casting operation, being positioned between a pair of line clamping jaws which are ordinarily set to receive a line of predetermined length.
In order to provide for the production of slugs with blank spaces at the ends, for quadding or centring, without the necessity of filling out the composed line with blanks or quads, it has been proposed to provide means for automatically moving one or other, or both, of the jaws inwardly for the clamping of composed lines of less than full length. In these arrangements, however, the composed line itself acts as a stop for the inward movement of the jaw or jaws, so
that the length of the blank space at the respective end of the slug is determined by the length of the composed line, subject in some cases, to a limited outward movement of the jaws to allow for a predetermined maximum expansion of the line during justification when expansible spacebands are used.
The object of the present invention is to provide means independent of the composed line,
adjustable to determine the extent of the inward movement of the movable jaw or jaws, whereby the length of the blank space, or spaces produced on the slugs, is determined by the adjustment of the jaw or jaws, instead of by the length of the line, so that a denite indent may be produced on the cast slug, the end of the slug at which such indent is produced being determined by the particular jaw in connection with which the quadding adjustment is provided.
The invention may be carried out conveniently by arranging an adjustable stop in the path of the respective jaw during its inward movement, or in the path of a member of the jaw adjusting mechanism, which can be set to determine the desired extent of said inward movement or thrown out of action when not required.
The invention is hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing one constructional form thereof. In the said drawing:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of the pertinent parts frame of the machine being indicated in dotand-dash lines;
Figure 3 is an elevation as seen from the lefthand side of Figure 1, of the means for adjusting the stop, some of the parts being broken away 5. and some omitted.
According to the constructional form of apparatus illustrated in the drawing, the inward movement of the jaws I, 2, for quadding or centring, is effected by-a vertically movable operat- 10 ing rod 3. This rod is operatively connected with or disconnected from the respective jaws through levers Il, 5, pivoted to the vice frame 6, and having on their shorter arms pins extending beneath a collar 26 angularly adjustable at the 15 upper end of the rod 3. 'Ihe collar 26 is formed with segmental projections which are brought into and out of engaging relationship with the pins by angular adjustment of the collar so that either or both of the jaws I, 2, may be moved in- 20 wardly for quadding or centring by the operation of the rod.
As this arrangement, and the devices for operating the rod, do not per se constitute part of the p-resent invention, it is deemed unneces- 25 sary to include herein any further detailed description or illustration thereof.
In applying the invention to the constructional form of quadding and centring apparatus above referred to, the adjustable stop is preferably 30 adapted to engage with a stop member I secured to the jaw-operating rod 3, and in the preferred arrangement now to be described, the adjustable stop and its adjusting devices are provided in the form of a self-contained unit supported in a 35 bracket 8 which can be attached to the vice frame 6 of the machine.
Referring first to Figure 1, the adjustable stop 9 is carried by a bar I0 which is slidable in a guideway on the bracket 8 constituted by side 40 members II and keeper plates I2. The adjusting devices for the stop 9 comprise a lever I3, one end of which turns about a fixed pivot I4 on the bracket 3. The free end of the lever I3 is pivoted to a link I5 which is in turn pivoted to a 45 stud IB (see particularly Figure 3), which is adjustable along a slot II in the bracket 8. The lever I3 is provided with a pin I8 located between the ends of the lever projecting rearwardly therefrom into engagement with a forked brack- 50 et I9 secured to the bar Ill.
As shown best in Figure 3, the stud I6 extends through the slot Il in the bracket 8, and at its outer end is fitted with an adjustable knob 20 which is axially movable on the stud I6 but is 55 angularly fast thereto. A spring 2l, acting between the lmob 2i! and a collar 22 on the stud I6, normally urges the knob 20 towards the bracket 8, and for the purpose of retaining the knob in any of its adjusted positions a rack 23 is formed on or secured to the bracket 8, this rack 23 extending parallel with the slot Il so as to engage teeth formed on the inner face of the knob 20, whatever the position of the latter along the said slot. A scale 24 arranged parallel with the slot il may be secured to the bracket 8 for cooperation with a pointer 25 on the knob 2G in determining the necessary adjustment for an indent of any desired length.
The constructional form of the invention above described operates as followsz-When, for example, an indent of 6 ems, is required on a slug of normal length, the stud l is adjusted along the slot ll until the pointer 25 registers with the 6 em mark on the scale 2d, and locked in that position by the action of the spring 2l on the release of the knob 2G at the completion of the adjustment. Through the consequent movement of the lever i3 the bar lil is adjusted to set the stop 9 at the desired distance below the stop 'l on the jaw-operating rod 3. The just-described position oi adjustment is indicated in Figure l, wherein also both jaws l, E, are represented as connected to the jaw-operating rod 3; thus, when the rod 3 is moved downwardly to effect the inward movement of the jaws, such downward movement will be arrested by the contact of the stop 'l with the stop S, and the jaws l, 2, consequently held in the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure l to produce an indent of 6 ems at both ends of the slug to be cast. A corresponding indent may, oi course, be produced at either end of the slug as desired by connecting only the respective jaw to the rod 3. When it is desi-red to operate the quadding and centring devices normallly, i. e., without producing a predetermined indent, the stop 9 may be rendered inoperative by setting its adjusting devices in the lowermost position indicated by dot-and-dash lines in Figure l. In cases where the quadding and centring devices are arranged to permit, in normal operation, an outward yielding of the jaws during the justication of lines containing spacebands, the indenting stop may be used in conjunction with means for limiting or preventing such outward yielding, which means, however, constitute no part of the present invention.
`It is to be understood that the constructional form of the invention and of the quadding and centring devices above described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing has been chosen merely as convenient examples, and that the invention contemplates variations in the form of the stop and its adjusting devices to suit any particular form of jaw-operating mechanism to which the invention is to be applied.
