16 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in typographical machines of the well known class wherein assembled lines of character bearing matrices are clamped between a pair of vise jaws in front of a mold for the casting of type bars or slugs therefrom, and it relates more particularly to devices now used on machines of this class for automatically quadding composed lines of matrices at either or both ends, examples of such devices as applied to machines of this class being disclosed in U. 5. Letters Patent Nos. 1,964,695 granted June 26, 1934 and 1,970,527 granted August 14, 1934.
The primary object of the present invention is to broaden the scope or range of operation of machines equipped with such devices whereby the machine, in addition to handling automatically ordinary full length matrix lines which are to be cast to the full column width or line measme for which the vise jaws are set and which do not require quadding, and shorter lines of random or irregular length with or without space bands and requiring quadding to fill out the remaining blank space at either or both ends, will also handle automatically short lines which require a definite amount of quadding so that they will cast exactly to a desired short line measure and thus be of the proper length to fit around cuts or the like inserted in the column of print at either side thereof.
To this and other ends, the present invention provides means for setting the quadding mechanism in condition to function in the required manner, such means being adjustable and governing the conditions under which cooperation can take place between the jaw closing mechanism and a jaw stop device for locking and retaining the vise jaw or jaws in different closed or quadding positions to which they may be moved by the closing mechanism. The jaw stop device, according to different settings of the adjustable control means provided by the present invention, will function automatically either to retain the jaw or jaws in random closed or quadding positions with respect to lines composed too short to justify to definite line measures, and lines which do not contain space bands, or to locate and retain the jaw or jaws at different selected quadding positions with respect to lines composed short of a definite short line measure within a maximum amount allowed by the control means.

It will also be understood that in carrying out the invention, the particular form of the jaw stop device and jaw closing mechanism and manner in which these elements cooperate to lock and retain the jaw or jaws in different closed or quadding positions may vary according to the nature of the quadding mechanism employed. The principal consideration is, that a control means be provided for governing the cooperation between the jaw stop device and the jaw closing mechanism whereby such cooperation will take place either at random quadding positions of the jaw or jaws or only when the jaw or jaws, after partaking of quadding movement, occupy one or another selected quadding position corresponding to a desired short line measure.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the features of novelty being pointed out more particularly in the claims at the end of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, i represents the usual vise frame in which the right hand and left hand vise jaws 2 and 3 respectively are mounted slidably for movement toward and from one another, the jaws being provided with suitable actuating mechanism such for example as that shown in Patent No. 1,970,527 hereinbefore referred to. Such mechanism, as shown in the present instance, comprises a jaw closing lever l connected to a rack bar which is provided with means such as a bolt 6 and lever 5 for connecting and disconnecting it with respect to the right hand jaw 2, a rack bar 5 similar to the bar it connected to the left hand Vise jaw 3, and a coupling pinion 7 fixed to the lower end of a vertically movable and rotatable shaft 8. The construction and operation of the jaw moving mechanism shown and described is the same as that disclosed in the Sperry Patent No. 1,970,527 hereinbefore referred to, to which reference is made for a more detailed disclosure thereof, and since the jaw moving mechanism per se forms no part of the present invention, further iliustration and description thereof are deemed unnecessary.
The underside of the bar 5 is provided with serrations E3 to cooperate with a toothed pawl l4 which constitutes a jaw stop device for retaining the jaw or jaws in different closed or quadding positions, the pawl hi being pivoted at l5 on a vertically disposed lever IS the lower end of which is pivoted on the lower portion of the vise frame, as shown in Patent No. 1,970,527 hereinbefore referred to, and a spring i i acts on the pawl l4 to swing it upwardly about its pivot when released. In the present instance however, the pawl M is released by a dog I7 which is pinned or otherwise fixed to a shaft is mounted rotatably in a bracket iS fixed to the rear side of the vise frame, the shaft i8 also having a latch l9 pinned or otherwise fixed thereon, as shown and described in my prior application Serial No. 58,017 filed January 7, 1936. By this arrangement, upon the usual advance of the mold disk 29 towards the vise jaws after the latter have closed, contact of a mold on the disk with the dog I? will rock the shaft it and thereby trip the latch is out of engagement with a block 21 secured to the pawl 14.
In order to prevent engagement until the proper time between the pawl 54 when so released and the bar 5, a gravity pawl 22 is provided, this gravity pawl being pivoted on and carried by a pin l 22 fixed in and projecting from the rear side of the bar 5, the gravity pawl resting on a shoulder 23 on the pawl i4, and the gravity pawl 22 being formed at one end with a lug 22 which cooperates with an adjustable member 24. As shown in Fig. 7, there is sufficient play or space between the engaging faces of lug 22 and member 24, to always allow the pawl Ht, when released, to swing upwardly sufficiently to prevent latch 19, under the action of its return spring fil from recngagover the block 2i. Such reengagement, however, is provided for at the proper time, by the downward movement of the link mil of the vise jaw closing attachment it! provided on machines of this class, the stud N32 of said attachment enga ng the arm m3 of a latch W4 and the latter engaging a shoulder I05 on the pawl id, as shown and described in my prior application hereinbefore referred to. Upon retreat of the mold, after the cast has taken place, the latch is, under the influence of its spring E9 will reengage the block 25 on pawl [4, following the downward swing of the latter under the action of the latch led.
The cooperative relation between the member 2t and pawls l4 and 22 is the same, under certain conditions as that between certain elements shown in Patent No. 1,970,527 hereinbefore referred to, but according to the present invention and as distinguished from the arrangement disclosed in said patent, the lever it, normally held to the left by a spring le (Fig. 7) can be held so that its head 25 and cam surface 26 thereon lie either in or out of the path of a roller 27 carried on the usual vertically movable justification bar 28. The means provided in the present instance for thus controlling the position of the lever it comprises a cam 29 fixed to a shaft 32 which is pivoted on and extends forwardly through the lever it, this shaft having a handle or lever 33 fixed on its forward end and which provides means for manually adjusting the cam 29 to bring either its face 3% or its lobe 3% against a stationary block 35 fixed on the vise frame.
When the cam 2a is set to bring the lobe 39 thereon into engagement with the block 3|, as shown in 6, the head 25 will be located to the right and out of the path of vertical movement of the roller and when said cam is set to bring the face 30 thereon into engagement with the block 3| as shown in Fig. '7, the head 25 on the lever I6 will lie in the path of vertical movement of the roller 21.
The member 24, as shown in detail in Fig. 4, comprises a slide 34 suitably guided to reciprocate in a housing 35 secured, as by screws 36, to the top of the vise frame, this slide being adjustable longitudinally by a pinion 31 which engages rack teeth 38 on the slide 34, said pinion being journalled in the housing 35 and having a knob 39 connected thereto for rotating it. The member 24 is formed on one end of a bar 40 secured to a member 4| which connects it to the slide 34, and the latter carries a finger 42 arranged to cooperate with a scale 43 mounted on the top of the vise frame, this finger and scale indicating the adjusted position of the member 24. The member 24 constitutes in effect an adjustable control means for the jaw stop device or pawl I4, the adjusted position of this member in relation to the composed and the justified length of the matrix line between the closed jaws determining the quadding position at which the pawl I4 will cooperate with the jaw closing mechanism of which the bar 5 is a part, or preventing such cooperation in the case of full length matrix lines.
The operation of the mechanism hereinbefore described is as follows: In Fig. 7, the cam 29 which controls the position of the lever I6 is adjusted to set the head 25 on this lever in the path of upward movement of the roller 21 on the justification bar, and in Fig. 5, as indicated by the dot and dash lines, the finger 42 is set, for the sake of illustration, at zero position at the left hand end of the scale 43, the left hand end 43 of this scale having graduations designating four positions or adjustments for the control member 24.
When the cam 29 and finger 42 are set as just described, the cooperative relation between the control member 24 and the pawls I4 and 22 is substantially the same as that between similar parts in Patent No. 1,970,527 hereinbefore referred to. At any setting of the control member 24 within the range of movement thereof corresponding to the readings I, 2 and 3 in the sec tion 43 at the left hand end of the scale 43, the quadding mechanism will function normally, that is, it will allow normal full lines to justify to the full line length or measure for which the jaws are set, as in any ordinary machine of this class, and it will automatically quad out all short lines composed to random lengths as they happen to occur. Thus, as shown in Fig. '7, when the justification bar rises as usual, the roller 21 thereon will contact with the cam surface 26 and swing the lever I6 to the right in that figure. The pawl I4 pivoted on the lever I6 will also move to the right in said figure, and if the com.- posed line presented between the jaws is sufli eiently long to prevent the lug 22* on the pawl 22 from moving to the right in said figure and from beneath the control member 24, the pawl M will be held from swinging upwardly about its pivot to engage the serrations I3 on the bar 5, notwithstanding that the pawl I4 will be released by tripping of the latch I9, and the movable jaw or jaws may then move outwardly to their normal open position against the usual jaw stops during justification of the line, and the justified line will be of full line measure. However, if the composed line presented between the jaws is sufficiently short to allow the lug 22 to move to the right far enough to pass beneath the control member 24, the pawl I4 will then be free to swing upwardly and engage the serrations I3 on the bar 5. The upward movement of the roller 21, acting on the cam surface 26 when the latter is in the path of said roller, as shown in Fig. '7, will urge the pawl I4 to the right, and when the pawl I4 is engaged with the serrations on the bar 5, the latter will be urged toward the right in said figure and the jaw or jaws connected to said bar will be moved to closed positions. Assuming that the short matrix lines contain space bands, the expansion of such space hands by the upward stroke of the justification bar, will react on the jaw or jaws connected to the. closing bar 5 and urge the latter toward the left in Fig. '7. These opposite forces acting on the bar 5 will, of course, result in tight clamping of the matrix line between the aws.
As previously stated, the stop control member 24 is shown in Figs. 5 and '7 as adjusted to the zero position on the portion 43 of the scale, and when so adjusted it will be evident that whether normal full lines or short lines are presented between the jaws, the lug 22 on the pawl 22 will normally lie to the right of the control member 24, even before the jaws close, and it will thus allow the pawl I4, in every instance, to swing upwardly and engage the serrations on the bar 5 as soon as the latch I9 is tripped by the advance of a mold to casting position. Such zero setting of the control member 24 is used when a number of lines are to be cast which do not contain the Q usual expansible space bands. Should the control member 24 be adjusted to the I, 2 or 3 reading on the portion 43 of the scale, which readings preferably correspond to the printers em scale, it would occupy a position overlying the 6 justment of the control member 24, provided I such lines contain sufiicient space bands, will justify to the full line measure. On the other hand, any lines composed short of such measure by more than the amount indicated on the portion 43 of the scale will be ouadded out, due to engagement of the pawl I4 with the serrations on the bar 5, such engagement taking place due to the passing of the lug 22 from beneath or moving beyond the control member 24 during closing movement of the quadding jaw. The pawl I4 thus acts.-in effect, as a jaw stop cooperable with the jaw closing bar 5 to lock the movable jaw or jaws in different random quadding positions which such jaw or jaws may assume while the cam 29 is set in the'position shown in Fig. '7.
According to the present invention, the cooperation between the jaw stop device or pawl I4 and the jaw closing bar 5 is controlled so as to allow such cooperation to take place automatically not only at random quadding positions of the jaw or jawsbut also at different selected quadding positions thereof corresponding to definite short line measures, whenever such action of 1 vided with graduated readings from 1 to ems,
and the slide which carries the stop control member 24, is set with its indicator finger 42 at the 12 em reading, as indicated by the full lines in that figure. Such setting of the control member 24 is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, and in these figures the cam 29 is shown set so that its lobe Sll rests against the stationary block 3| on the vise frame I. With the parts so adjusted, when the justification bar 28 rises, as usual, to justify a line between the jaws, the roller 2'! will clear or not engage the head on the lever 16. Assuming that a short matrix line M has been presented between the jaws, the jaw closing bar 5 will move to the right in these figures, and if the line has been composed to a length sufficiently close to the selected 12 em length, the lug 22 on the pawl 22 will assume a position beneath the stop control member 24 during the jaw closing movement of the bar 5, so that notwithstanding tripping of the latch H! to release the pawl M, the latter will be prevented from swinging upwardly into engagement with the serrations on the bar 5 until interference therewith, by the control member 24,, is overcome. Since the jaw 2 which, in Fig. 1 has closed from the dot and dash line position to the full line position, is free to move outwardly or to the left in that figure under the expanding influence of the usual space bands in the line which serve L; to justify it, the bar 5, with the pawl 22 thereon,
will be carried to the left in this figure during justification, and as soon as the lug 22 passes the left hand edge of the control member 24, the pawl M will be free to swing upwardly and engage the serrations IS on the bar 5 when released by tripping of the latch 19, as shown in Fig. 2. The location of the left hand edge of the control member 24 corresponds to the selected reading on the em scale 43 and consequently engagement of the pawl M with the serrations it on the bar 5 will occur exactly at the desired quadding position of the jaw, that is, the pawl M, acting as a jaw stop for locating and retaining the jaw or jaws in different selected quadding positions, will be permitted to cooperate automatically with the jaw closing mechanism of which the bar 5 is a part, exactly at the 12 em short line measure position in the case of the setting just described, or the such other definite quadding position for which the control member fi l may be set. Since the cam 29 carried by the lever it is set with its lobe 30- against the relatively fixed block 3! on the vise frame when the device is adjusted for the quadding of short 1; lines to definite short line measures as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, movement of the lever l6 and the pawl it carried by it will be prevented, and when the pawl M engages the serrations H3 in th bar 5, it will function as a stop which will definitely locate and retain the jaw or jaws in the selected quadding position corresponding to definite selected short line measure.
The horizontal extents of the engaging surfaces on the lug 22 and control member 24, it is to be understood, are such that lines to be quadded to a selected short line measure may be composed within variable amounts of the desired measure, it being seen for example in Fig. 1 that about one-half the extent of the lug 22 underlies the control member 24. One or two less matrices in the composed line may allow the lug 22 to underlie the full extent of the control member 24 or to underlie only a portion of the right hand end thereof, but in any event, assuming the presence oi a sufficient number of space bands in the line, justification thereof will move the bar 5 and lug 22 to the left sufiiciently far to clear the left hand edge of the control member 24, as shown in Fig. 2.
Should a line be presented between the jaws which contains space bands but is so short as to allow the lug 22 to pass to the right of the control member 2 when the jaw closes, or should the line be so long as to prevent the lug 22 from reaching the control member 24 when the jaw closes, the pawl M, when released by tripping of the latch is, will immediately swing upwardly into engagement with the serrations I3 on the bar 5. Such lines, when justified, will simply cast as ordinary quadded lines of random lengths, the space bands present in such lines assuring sufficient expansion thereof to take up the play between adjacent teeth on the pawl l4 and the bar 5. Obviously, lines which do not contain space bands can be cast only when the cam 25 is set with its face 3% against the block 3i, such adjustment of this cam allowing the roller 27! to engage the cam surface 26 on the lever It as hereinbefore explained whereby the pawl i l engaged with the bar 5 will exert closing action on the jaw or jaws to clamp such lines endwise.
The present invention thus provides an adjustable control means for governing the action of the jaw stop device for retaining the vise jaw or jaws in different quadding positions, such control means allowing the jaw stop to cooperate with the jaw closing mechanism automatically whenever lines are presented between the jaws which are too short to justify to definite full or short line measures and to thus retain the jaw or jaws at random closed or quadding position and, whenever required, allowing such cooperation of the jaw stop device with the jaw closing mechanism to take place only when the jaw or jaws occupy one or another selected quadding position corresponding to desired short line measures less than the full line measure for which the jaws are initially set.
What I claim is:
1. In or for a slug casting machine, the combination with a pair of vise jaws and jaw closing mechanism connectable to at least one of the jaws for moving it from a normal open position toward the other jaw, of a jaw stop device, means for releasing said device to eifect cooperation thereof with said jaw closing mechanism, and an adjustable stop control member for permitting such cooperation at the closed position within the range of movement of the movable jaw corresponding to the adjustment of said control member.
2. In or for a slug casting machine, the combination with a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws and mechanism for moving at least one of stop control member adjustable to definite short line measure positions within the range of quadding movement of said jaw and adapted to effect cooperation between the jaw stop device and the jaw moving mechanism only when said jaw occupies a quadding position corresponding to the adjustment of said control member.
3. In or for a slug casting machine, the combination with a pair of matrix line confiningvise jaws both arranged for quadding and mechanism for effecting quadding movement of either or both jaws, of a jaw stop device cooperable with said mechanism to retain the jaw or jaws at different quadding positions, an adjustable stop control member for permitting such cooperation at different selected quadding positions, and means for selectively rendering said stop device responsive to or independent of said control member.
4. In or for a slug casting machine, the combination of a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws both arranged for quadding and means for effecting quadding movement of either or both jaws, of a jaw stop device for retaining the jaw or jaws at different quadding positions, and means for selectively rendering said stop device automatically operative to retain the jaw or jaws at random or at definite selected quadding positions within their range of movement.
5. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of vise jaws both arranged for quadding movement and mechanism for effecting such movement of one or both jaws, a jaw stop device cooperable with said mechanism for retaining the 3 jaw or jaws in different quadding positions to which they are moved, line justifying means, and an adjustable control member for permitting such cooperation at definite selected quadding positions of the jaw or jaws in the case of lines justifiable to the short line measure corresponding to such selected position and for permitting such cooperation at random quadding positions of the jaw or jaws in the case of lines not justifiable to such short line measure.
6. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws and mechanism connectable to either or both jaws for moving the connected jaw or jaws one toward the other from a full matrix line receiving position to quad out a short matrix line, and line justifying means, a jaw stop device releasable at different quadding positions of the jaw or jaws and cooperable with the jaw moving mechanism to retain said jaw or jaws in quadding position, and an adjustable stop control member for selecting the quadding position at which said jaw stop device cooperates with said jaw moving mechanism.
7. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws and mechanism connectable to either or both jaws for moving the connected jaw or jaws one toward the other from a full matrix line receiving position to quad out short composed matrix lines, and line justifying means, a jaw stop device cooperable with the jaw moving mechanism to retain the jaw or jaws in quadding position during the operation of said justifying means, and a stop control member adjustable to definite predetermined quadding positions and adapted to prevent such cooperation until the composed lines are justified to a length corresponding to the adjustment of said control member.
8. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of relatively movable matrix line confining vise jaws and connected jaw closing mechanism to effect such movement of at least one of the jaws from an open line receiving position toward the other jaw to quad out short matrix lines, and line justifying means, a jaw stop device releasable upon closing of the connected jaw to different quadding positions and adapted to cooperate with the jaw closing mechanism during the operation of the line justifying means, an adjustable stop control member adapted to permit justification of short lines to definite lengths corresponding to the adjustment thereof prior to such cooperation, and a member for rendering said jaw stop device operative to limit the justification of short lines independently of said control.
9.1'n or for a slug casting machine having a pair of vise jaws both arranged for quadding movement and a jaw closing device connectable to at least one of the jaws for effecting such movement from a full matrix line receiving position to confine short composed matrix lines presented between the jaws, and line justifying means, a jaw stop device cooperable with the jaw closing device for retaining the movable jaw in different quadding positions commensurate with the short matrix lines, and a stop control member adjustable to diiferent quadding positions corresponding to definite short line measures and adapted to prevent such cooperation automatically in the case of lines justifiable to full line measure or to definite short line measures determined by the adjustment of said control.
16. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of vise jaws both arranged for quadding movement and a jaw closing device for effecting such movement of at least one of the jaws from a full matrix line receiving position to confine short composed matrix lines, and line justifying means, a jaw stop device normally actuated by said line justifying means and cooperative upon such actuation with the jaw closing device to retain the movable jaw in different quadding positions commensurate with the composed length of the short matrix lines, a member for setting said stop device in inoperative relation with respect to the line justifying means, and a stop control member adjustable to definite selected quadding positions and adapted upon the latter setting of the stop device to cause said device to cooperate with the jaw closing device and retain the movable jaw at the quadding position determined by the adjustment of said control member.
11. In or for a slug casting machine having a a pair of vise jaws both arranged for quadding movement and a jaw closing device for effecting such movement of at least one of the jaws from a full matrix line receiving position to confine short composed matrix lines, and line justifying means, a jaw stop device normally actuated by said line justifying means and cooperative upon such actuation with the jaw closing device to retain the movable jaw in different quadding positions commensurate with the composed length of the short matrix lines, a member for setting said stop device in inoperative relation with respect to the line justifying means, and a stop control member adjustable to definite selected quadding positions within the range of movement of the movable jaw and adapted upon the latter setting of the stop device to determine the quadding position at which said device cooperates with the jaw closing device.
12. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws, and means for moving at least one of the jaws from normal open position toward the other jaw to quad out short matrix lines, a jaw stop device having means for holding it in a relatively fixed position and cooperable with said jaw moving means, and a control member settable at will in different definite short line measure positions and cooperable with the jaw stop device to cause engagement of the latter with the jaw moving means to hold the movable jaw in a quadding position corresponding with the short line measure setting of said control member.
13. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws, and means for moving at least one of the jaws from normal open position toward the other jaw to quad out short matrix lines, a jaw stop device having means for holding it in a relatively fixed position and cooperable with said jaw moving means, line justifying means, and a control member settable at will in different definite short line measure positions and cooperable with the jaw stop device to prevent engagement thereof with the jaw moving means prior to justification of the line and to release said jaw stop device for engagement with said jaw moving means during justification of the line to hold the movable jaw in a quadding position corresponding with the short line measure setting of said control member.
14. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws, and means for moving at least one of the jaws from normal open position toward the other jaw to quad out short matrix lines, a jaw stop device having means for holding it in a relatively fixed position and cooperable with said jaw moving means, a member for releasing said jaw stop device for engagement with the jaw moving means, line justifying means, and a control member settable selectively in different definite short line measure positions and cooperable with the jaw stop device to prevent engagement thereof with the jaw moving means prior to justification of the line and after its release by said releasing member, and operable to cause engagement of the jaw stop device with the jaw moving means during justification of the line to hold the movable jaw in a quadding position which corresponds with the selected short line measure setting of the control member.
15. In or for a slug casting machine having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws, and means for moving at least one of the jaws from normal open position toward the other jaw to quad out short matrix lines, a jaw stop device having means for holding it in a relatively fixed position and cooperable with said jaw moving means, line justifying means, and a control member for the jaw stop device settable at will in different definite short line measure positions and also within certain limits of full line measure position and operative to cause engagement of the jaw stop device with the jaw moving means during justification of the line, means operative to actuate the jaw stop device, during justification of the line, to move the movable jaw inwardly, and means for rendering said actuating means inactive on the jaw stop device and for holding the latter in a relatively fixed position.
16. In or for a slug casting machine, having a pair of matrix line confining vise jaws, and
means including a reciprocatory member for moving at least one of the jaws from normal open position toward the other jaw to quad out short matrix lines, a jaw stop device cooperable with said reciprocatory member to hold the movable jaw in a closed position, line justifying means, means for actuating the jaw stop device in the direction of movement of said reciprocatory member during justification of a line to move the movable jaw inwardly against a line,
means for rendering said actuating means inactive on the jaw stop device and for holding the latter in a fixed position, and a control member settable selectively in the direction of movement of said reciprocatory member into diiferent definite short line measure positions and controlling the engagement of the jaw stop device with said reciprocatory member according to the position occupied by said control member.
