This invention relates to typographical slug casting. machines such as those known commercially under the registered trade-mark Li-no type, and more particularly to machines provided with quadding and centring attachments,
whereby either or both of the vice jaws (between which line of composed. matricesis clamped during the casting operation) is or. are automatically moved inwardly to closeon to a line? wardly to a predeterminedextent after they have been closedon to the line and before justification takes place, or to permit. the jaws to move outwardly to alimited. extent under theexpandinginfluence of the; spacebands in the line during justification to provide for'spreading; of the line by a predetermined amount, or to a. predeterminedlength.
With these knownarrangements, however-,excessive justification may take place before-the line is filled out to the-length-determined by the outward movement of the jaws, especially with lines considerably shorter than the desiredlength and containing few spacebands.
The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the justifying action of the spacebands is itself limited when such lines are to be centre-d or quadded, while permitting full justification to be eifected when the quadding attachment is out of operation.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a typographical slug casting machine embodying means for quadding or oentring the matrices, wherein are provided means for limiting the movement of the justificationlbar which are set for operation by means associated with the quadding or centring devices, and become operative when the movement of the jaw control rod exceeds a prearranged amount.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of two forms, given by way of example, which it may assume, and this description will be more conveniently followed by reference to the accompanying drawings, where- 1n: Figures 1 and 2 represent, in front and side elevation respectively, a machine incorporating the invention;
Figures 3 to 6 represent details thereof in larger scale, and
Figures 7 and 8 represent, respectively in front and side elevation',amachine incorporating another formof the invention.
According to one constructional form of the invention, shown-in Figures-1: to 6, the'justifica- 7 tion limiting stop is in the form-of aspring controlled latch a: turning about. a fixed pivot into and out of engagement with a slot or recess-b in. each of the two rods cand d, by which the.-j ustification bar is actuated; The. latch a is normally held in inoperative positionagainst the action. of its spring e by a bolt i which is movedout of the-path of the latch. when the quadding attachment is set for operation. As shown,.,the bolt fis actuated by links a connected with the.c0n-, trol lever h of the quadding attachment; one of. which links rides in an inclined slot tin-.the. headot the. bolt. to raisezor lowenit when the lever? is moved.- When. the bolt f has been lifted, the-latch wise heldiirr inactive position. by a regulating catch is. adjustably securedto the jaw control rod Z, the movement of which .is'd'ependent upon the length of the line against which the-line clamping-jaws are closed, so that by: adjustment of the regulating catch 7c up or down relatively to the said control rod l' the justification. stop latch a can be brought into action when-the-jaws are, closed on to. a line of any given length. Thus, when the machine is; set.- for quadding or; centring, the justification. stop may be automatically brought into the active position when a line is presented between the jaws, in the event of such short line being less than the pro-arranged working measure by an amount exceeding a predetermined limit.
The operation will become clear by reference to Figures 3 to 6, wherein Figures 3 andrfirepresent in plan the latch 11 and associated elements respectively in the inoperative and operative positions, while Figures 4 and 6 represent respectively side sectional elevations of the settings shown in Figures 3 and 5.
In a modification of the invention shown in Figures 7 and 8, the control lever m for the quadding setting has on the same shaft 12 a cam o. On a separate parallel shaft 1) are secured two levers r and s, the latter being connected by links t to another short shaft u carrying an L- shaped stop member '0. A spring 10, extending between the frame of the machine and one of the links t, urges the arm s and its shaft in a counterclockwise direction as shown in Figure 8, but such movement is prevented by contact of the adjustable screw :1: on lever 1" with the cam 0, when the lever m is set in the position shown in Figure 8 holding the quadding devices inoperative. With this setting the stop member is held out of the path of a roller 3; on the justification rod z, and full justification is therefore possible.
Also secured to the shaft is an arm a having a pin b adapted to ride on a collar 0 adjustably secured to the jaw control rod 11 When the control rod d is in its uppermost position, and the jaws are thus open, the collar 0 holds the arrangement of levers and links in the positions shown in Figure 8, independently of whether or not the cam o is set to hold the screw 3:. When, however, the control rod descends to close the jaws this restraint is removed, and, provided the cam 0 has been released from the screw 1: (which, as explained, occurs when the jaws are set for quadding or centring by means of the lever m), the pin 17 follows the collar 0 under action of the spring 10 and the linkage system is moved to bring the stop member '0 in the path of the roller 1/ on the justification rod a, whereby the movement of the justification rod is limited.
By adjustment of the position of'the collar 0 on the control rod (1 the initial position of the stop 22 can be modified, so that by this means the amount of movement of the rod al necessary before the stop 1) is in its operative position can be adjusted. 7
It must be understood that the invention is not restricted solely to the details of the forms described above, which may be modified as desired under various conditions and requirements which have to be fulfilled without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having described our invention, we declare that what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A typographical slug casting machine comprising matrix-clamping jaws and a control rod therefor, means for conditioning the control rod for a quadding or centring operation of the jaws, a device for justifying the matrix line, means for limiting the movement of said justifying device, and means associated with said conditioning means whereby said limiting means are set, in
.: order to operate when the movement of said jaw control rod exceeds a prearranged amount.
2. A typographical slug casting machine comprising matrix-clamping jaws and a control rod therefor, means for conditioning the control rod for a quadding or centring operation of the jaws,
a device for justifying the matrix line, a stop member adapted to engage, and thereby limit the movement of said justifying device, and means to actuate a part normally holding said stop member out of operation and thereby release said stop, said actuating means being governed by the control rod conditioning means.
3. A typographical slug casting machine comprising matrix-clamping jaws and a control rod therefor, means for conditioning the control rod for a quadding or centring operation of the jaws, a device for justifying the matrix line, means for limiting the movement of said justifying device, means associated with said jaw control rod adapted to hold said limiting means out of operation until movement of said control rod exceeds a prearranged amount, and additional means governed by the control rod conditioning means for also holding the limiting means out of operation.
'4. A typographical slug casting machine according to claim'3, wherein said means associated with the jaw control'rod are adjustable to allow alteration as desired of the necessary amount of preoperative movement of said control rod.
5. A typographical slug casting machine comprising matrix-clamping jaws and a control rod therefor, means for conditioning the control rod for a quadding or centring operation of the jaws ed to hold said spring-urged lever out of engagement with said justifying device, even after it is released by operation of said quadding and centring setting lever, until movement of the jaw control rod has exceeded a prearranged amount.
