(Cl. 19949) This invention relates to typographical composing and casting machines such as are known commercially under the registered trade-mark" Linotype wherein circulating matrices are released from a magazine by a keyboard mechanism in the order in which their characters are to appear in print and then composed in line in an assembling elevator, the composed line transferred to a line transporter or so-called first e1e-, vator which descends to present the said line to the face of a mold, the mold filled with molten metal to form a slug or cast type bar against the matrices which produce the type characters thereon and the matrices thereafter returned to the magazine from which they started.
In such machines the matrices are received by the jaw of the transporter at its line receiving position and in its normal cycle the transporter first moves from this position downwards to the line casting position, then upwards above the line receiving position to the matrix distributing position when it again descends to the line receiving position.
It is sometimes desirable that means shall be provided whereby the cycle of the transporter is variedsuch, for instance, as where it is proposed to introduce one or more hand composed lines from a font of matrices not at the time carried in the machine or from matrices which are too large or otherwise not intended for ma chine composition.
According to the present invention a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to is provided having a transporter cam and a transporter cam roller and selective mechanism for varying the cycle of the transporter so that the transporter jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only when desired. The cycle of the transporter may be varied from that normally employed when matrices are being automatically composed by the use of the keyboard in such a manner that the transporter jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only. Preferably, a double track is provided on the transporter cam and selective means are provided whereby the cam roller on the transporter lever is caused to pass over one track when the normal cycle is required and over the other when the cycle is required to be varied in manner aforesaid. The cam track may be provided with a'raised portion having alternative tracks upon and below the same. Preferably, spring fingers are provided at either end thereof which are so disposed that the cam roller passes over the Enfield, and William same when the transporter is required to perform its normal cycle.
The said selective means may comprise an interponentadapted to cause one of said fingers to be raised so that the cam roller is free to take the lower track, the said interponent being brought into operation when it is desired to change the transporter to the shorter cycle. The arrangement may be such that the interponent is held out of engagement when the machine clutch is disengaged. Means may further be provided, operative when the mechanism is set for the shorter cycle, for carrying out any function normally performed by the transporter when it rises to the line distribution position, such, for'example, as the release of the spaceband shifter carriage catch. A connection to release the said catch may be provided which is engaged by the transporter jaw at the line receiving position. The selecting mechanism may be operated .by hand or from some part of the machine. Inone embodiment the said mechanism is actuated by the movement of the transporter head for example by rotation thereof.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring tothe drawings and first to Figures 1 to 7, the transporter l is raised and lowered in the normaljway by engagement with a lever or system of levers 2 to the otherend of which is secured a cam roller 3 whichruns on a track 1 the ra spo er cam 4. The transporter cam according to the invention is formed with a double track, one track following the normal configuration of the cam and having portions thereof so shaped that the cycle of movement of the transporter extends-from the'line receiving position to the casting position, thence upwardsto a position that they form part of the upper cam 7 track and constitute the portion of that track' leading up to and from the highest portion thereof. The leading finger l is provided with 'an'extension H upon which is mounted a pawl roller I2. The arrangement of the pawl roller 12 upon the finger J is such that pressure upon "the said roller I2 causes the finger! to pivot thereby leaving open a passage to the eam' roller' 3 along the'lower track 6 of the transporter cam]. The cam roller '3 knocks the finger 8 at the other end of the lower cam track 6 out of the-way and the finger 8 springs ba'clc into position after the roller 3 has passed. i An interponent I3 is provided which is brought into such a position that it will'engage the pawl roller IZand raise the finger 1 when it is; desired that the lower cam track '6 shall be traversed by the transporter'cam' roller '3 so that the cycle is varied from the normal. The said interponent I3 is disposed at the end of a rod l4 under the actionof a tension spring l5 anchored to a fixed part of the machine It, and tending to pull the interponent l3 into the path of the pawl roller l2. This spring is normally not permitted to operate in this manner on account of a stop IT on the said rod l4 againstwhich a trip catch [8 is-engaged. The said catch I8 is engaged at oneend by a Bowden wire l9,pull on whieh=causes the catch l8 to be held clear of the said stop I] so that the interp'onent I3 is brought into operation by means of the spring l-5- above referred to. The catch 18 is inthe form of a bar and is pivoted at or about its centre 20 to a fixed partof the machine the other end 2 being also attached to-a fixed point by means of a; tension spring 22 so that the catch l fl'tends normally to drop in behind the stop H on the rod 14; and hold the interponent 13 out ot'operation The end of the rod l-4'which'does'not carry the interponent is engaged with one annfof a lever 23- the other arm 24 of which is engaged in the clutch mechanism and is rocked when the clutch is disengaged so that the lever moves about its pivot 25'and the trip catch [8 drops in behind the stop 1'1 on therod I4 unless prevented by operation of -th'e pull handle 2 6'of the Bowden'wire. As the clutch 21 is disengaged at the end of at normal cycle when the transporter l is at the line receiving position the cam interponent I3 is normally held out of operation atthispoint;

In thisarrangement an extension 3| may be provided onthe detachable transporter jaw or handsti-ck 30 which is adapted to engage with a vertical push rod 32 secured in brackets 33 in the machine. The upper end of the push rod 3! located adjacent to the catch 34 which normally holds'the spaceband shifter carriage and which is usually released by the transporter jaw 35 so that the spaceband shifter carriage can move to the right 'for removal of the spacebands. In this case as the transporter jaw 35 does not ascend above the line receiving position the catch 34 is released by means of the push rod32 which is actuated-by means of the extension 3| in manner aforesaid. Where a special transporter head 28such as is last referred to is not provided asa part of the machine; a'catch may be provided' on the transporter jaw'to engage the push rod; The said catch may be manually or automatically movable into an inoperative position when the transporter is required to perform its normal cycle in which it rises to the line'distributing position.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 8 and 9 on the rotation of the transporter head to bring the jaw 30 into the operative position automatically 'actuates the selecting mechanism and brings the interponent' l3 into operation to vary the transporter cycle. In these figures the shaft 3Bis carried'in bearings in the transporterl and'its upper-end projects through the spindle 31in the rotatable head 28. The said shaft 36 is fixed by means of a taper pin 38 to the brackets 39.
, The shaft 36 is provided with an eccentric body for a portionof its length carrying the full strokes'of the transporter past a fixed point asv bcs'tshown in F-igureS. A roller so which is carr ied'by one'end of a lever 4|, is held in contact with the eccentric body portion of the shaft 36 by means of a spring 42 and the otherend of the lever 4lengages lever 43 which is connected by means of the'cable l9 to the-catch I8. The lever 4i iscar-ried on the vise frame and the lever- 33 on a bracket mounted on the machine frame. The arrangement of these two levers is such that the vise may be opened without interference-and they are-also so disposed that the selecting mechanism may be operated-by hand by means of the lever 4-3 when-an ordinary transporter head is employed and the operator desires t orepe'at' the casting cycle.
In Figure '10 the catch [8 is shown holding the selecting'mechanisrn inoperative. If the head "20 is rotated;through- 'so as to bring the inopjerative jaw into the operative position the shaft 36-i s' rotated therewith so that the spring 42 ise'nabledto' actuate the levers 4i and 43 to with-- draw the catch [8 thereby freeing the selecting mechanism'to change the operating cyclewhen the machine-is'started. In a typographical composing machine of thekind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the same including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, said cam being provided with an alternative cam track which coincides with the normal track for a part of the cam contour and is located below the same for'the remainder thereof, a pivoted finger forming part of said normal track and connecting the same with said alternative track, and an interponent engaging said finger and directing said cam roller on to said alternative track to vary the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only.
10. In a typographical composing machine ofthe kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and fingers being provided with a projection, an
interponent adapted to engage said projection to move said finger out of the path of said cam roller and permit the same to pass over said alternative cam track to vary the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positionsonly.

In atypographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the same including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, said cam being provided with an alternative cam track which coincides with the-normal track for a part of the cam contour.

In a typographicalcomposing machine of the'kind referred to, the. combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the same including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, said cam being provided'with an alternative cam track which coincides with the normal track for a. part of the cam contour and is located below the same for the remainder thereof, a movable member forming part of said normal-track and connectingthe same with said alternative track, and an interponent directing said cam roller on to said alternative track to vary the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the'line receiving and casting positions only, said interponent being attached to one end of a spring loaded shaft tending to bring the same into operation, said shaft being provided with a stop engaging a spring loaded pivoted lever which springs into position behind said step and is re moved by manually operated means to enable said spring loaded shaft to actuate said interponent.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the same including'a transporter cam and a single cam roller, and selective mechanismfor varying the cycle' of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only, said selective mechanism being'held out of engagement when the machine clutch is disengaged.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the same including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, said cam being provided with an alternative cam track which coincides with the normal track-for a part of the cam contour and is located below the same for the remainder thereof, a movable'member forming part of said normal track andconnecting the same with said'al'ternati've track, and an interponent directing "said cam roller on to said alternative track to vary the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only, said in'terponent'being attached to one end of a'spring loaded shaft tending to bring the same into operation, said shaft being pro& vided with a stop engaging a spring loaded pivoted lever which springs into position behind said stop and is removed by manually operated means to' enable said spring loaded shaft to actuatesaid interponent, and a second pivot d lever connected to the'opposite end of the spring loaded shaft to that to which said interponent is attached, the other end of said second pivoted lever engaging the clutch mechanism and arranged to be rocked when the clutch is disengaged so that said first pivoted lever is held behind the stop on said spring loaded shaft.

In' a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the: .same including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, selective'mechanism for varying the cycle of said transporter so that 'its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only, and mechanism operative when the transporter cycle is varied for carrying out a function normally performed by it when it rises to the line distribution position.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combinationof a line transporter, mechanism for raising and lowering the same including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, selective mechanism for varying the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only, and mechanism operative when the transporter cycle is varied for releasing the spaceband shifter catch.

In a typographical composing machine 'of' the kind referred to, the combination of a line adapted to engage a member to transporter, a rotatable head for said line transporter provided with a normal and with a detachable jaw, mechanism for raising and lowering said transporter including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, and selective mechanism for varying the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, a rotatable head for said line transporter provided with a normal and with a detachable jaw, mechanism for raising and lowering said transporter, including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, an extension on said do tachable jaw arranged to engage a push rod which is adapted to release the retaining catch for the spaceband shifter carriage on the jaw ascending to the line receiving position, and selective mechanism for varying the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter, a rotatable head for said line transporter provided with a normal and with a detachable jaw, mechanism for raising and lowering said transporter, and selective mechanism for varying the cycle of said transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only, said selective mechanism being brought into operation by rotation of the first elevator head.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, thecombination of a line transporter, a rotatable head for said line transporterprovided with a normal and with a de tachable jaw, mechanism for raising and lowering said transporter including a transporter cam and a single cam roller, the said rotatable head being mounted upon a shaft rotating therewith, said shaft having an eccentric portion which upon rotation actuates connections which release an interponent operating to vary the cycle of the transporter so that its jaws are raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only.

In or for a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, a transporter cam having a double cam track, one track being of normal contour and the other adapted to reciprocate the transporter between the line receiving and casting positions, a portion of the contour of the cam being common to both tracks, and the remainder of the tracks being arranged above one another, movable fingers being provided' at either end of the upper track portion joining the two tracks to one another.
22. A transporter cam according to claim 21 wherein the movable fingers are pivoted and spring loaded so that they return to their normal position after movement and wherein the foremost finger is provided with a projection give the same a pivotal movement.

In a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, the combination of a line transporter provided with a head portion adjustable to receive a keyboard-composed line or a hand-composed line as desired, mechanism for raising and lowering the transporter, and selective mechanism ,for varyingthe cycle of said transporter so that its head portion is raised and lowered between the line receiving and casting positions only, said selective mechanism being brought into operation by the adjustment or the head portion to receive a hand-composed line.

In or for a typographical composing machine of the kind referred to, a transporter cam having a double cam track, one track being of normal contour and the other adapted to reciprocate the transporter between the line receiving and casting positions, a portion of the contour of the cam being common to both tracks, and the remainder of the tracks being arranged one above another in the same plane.
