Abstract
450,827. Type-bar-making machines. INTERTYPE, Ltd., 215, Farnham Road, Slough, Buckinghamshire. March 23, 1936, No. 8606. Convention date, Jan. 7. Addition to 402,809. [Class 100 (iii)] Quadding-apparatus.-In the apparatus described in the parent Specification, means are provided for justifying short lines to a constant predetermined measure when desired, in addition to the means for justifying such lines to irregular lengths. For this purpose, the vicejaw locking-device, which is acted upon by the justification bar in its ascent, in order to clamp the short line, is adapted to be removed from the influence of the justification bar, and to serve merely as an abutment for justification of the line. The locking-device comprises, as heretofore, a toothed pawl 10, pivoted to a lever 8, and tending under the action of a spring to engage a toothed part of the jawactuating bar 5. The lever 8 has pivoted to it a three-faced stop 15, and is urged to the left by a spring, to hold the stop 15 in contact with a fixed stop 16. When the face 25 of the stop 15 is opposed to the stop 16, the head 28 of the lever 8 is in the path of a roller 27 on the justification bar 29, so that the rise of the bar exercises a clamping action on the pawl 10, as described in the parent Specification. Short lines are thereby justified to a variable length. When short lines are to be justified to a constant length, the stop 15 is turned, so as to bring one of the faces 23, 24 into action. As those faces are farther from the pivot of the stop than is the face 25, the head 28 of the lever 8 is held out of the path of the roller 27. No clamping of the line then occurs, the pawl 10 serving only as an abutment for the jaws during justification. The short lines are composed by the operation to a length slightly less than that which they are to occupy when justified, the shortage not exceeding one toothspace of the pawl 10 and bar 5, which may be one em. The two faces 23, 24 of the stop 15 differ by half an em, to permit that amount of alteration in the length of the lines. The pawl 10 is normally held down out of engagement with the bar 5 by a latch, which is withdrawn by the movement of the mould-wheel towards the matrices. The pawl is again disengaged from the bar 5 after the casting by the usual downward movement of the vice-jaw closing attachment 50. Specification 405,869 is referred to.
