Abstract

387,254. Type-bar-maldng machines. INTERTYPE CORPORATION, 360, Furman Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 12, 1932, No. 22653. Convention date, May 19. [Class 100 (iii).] Clamping matrices.-Quadding-mechanism of the kind described in Specification 388,993 is modified so as to enable lines to be quadded, when required, at the left-hand end only, as well as quadded at the right-hand end or centralized. Jaw-closing mechanism similar to that described in the prior Specification is provided, and comprises a lever 8, Fig. 3, pivotally mounted on the machine frame, and adapted to be rocked by a cam acting through a spring 16. The lever 8 is pivotally connected to a rack-bar 5, normally connected to the right-hand jaw 3. The lefthand jaw 2 is provided with a rack-bar 4, Fig. 1, which can be connected to the bar 5, so as to effect a movement of both jaws, by an axiallymovable pinion 20, operated by means of a knob 23. The rack-bar 5 and the jaw 3 are normally held in retracted or full-line receiving position by a latch 18a, which is tripped by the first elevator in its descent. When moved into contact with the matrices, the jaws are locked by a toothed pawl 36, adapted to engage teeth on the underside of the rack-bar 5, and pivotally mounted on a lever 24, which is rocked by a roller 52 on the justification-bar 51 during its ascent. The rocking of the lever 24 first disengages the pawl 36 from a fixed stop 42, whereupon the pawl is raised by a spring into engagement with the rack-bar 5. The further movement of the lever 24 forces the pawl and the rack-bar to the right, so as to lock the line. Means are provided for leaving a variable amount of unfilled space in the line, in the case of lines which are set nearly of full length, before the pawl 36 engages the rack-bar 5. These comprise a pawl 76, pivoted on the rack-bar, and adapted to intervene between a projection 40a on the pawl 36 and a stop-pin 81, when the rack-bar is in retracted position. The stop-pin 81 is mounted in a rotatable member 80, so that the distance through which the rack-bar moves, before it is engaged by the pawl 36, can be varied. The pawl 36 is also controlled by a lever 53, which is operated by a pin 57 on the left-hand viceclosing device, which is operated from a cam through a rod 58 in known manner. The lever 53 serves to depress the pawl 36 slightly, so as to relax the locking pressure on the line, in order to permit of the alignment of the matrices between the first and the second justification. The full descent of the rod 58 retracts the pawl from the rack-bar 5, to permit of its return to initial position. When lines are to be quadded at the left-hand end only, the right-hand jaw 3 is disconnected from the rack-bar 5 by movement of a sliding pin 150, operated by a handlever 155, the movement of the pin also serving to lock the jaw to the vice-cap. The rackbars 4, 5 are then connected by means of the pinion 20, so that only the left-hand jaw 2 is operated by the closing mechanism.
