Abstract
690,638. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Sept. 19, 1950 [Sept. 20, 1949], No. 22961/50. Class 100(iii) Clamping matrices.-In a machine of the general construction of that disclosed in Specification 540,553, means is provided for locking the vertical rod 11, Fig. 1, to hold the jaw or jaws in linecontacting position, and for applying pressure to cause the line to be squeezed before casting, the rod 11 being provided with rack teeth 42, Figs. 1 and 8, adapted to be engaged by rack teeth on four detents 40 in a housing 43. By rotating a screw 45, the detents are moved towards the rod. The teeth on each detent are staggered with respect to those on the others, so that in any position of the rod, one detent moves into full engagement with the rod, the detents being slightly depressed if necessary by the bevelled teeth to ensure complete engagement. The remaining detents yield against springs 41c. The screw 45 is rotated to locking position when the metal pot swings into casting position, by means of a spring-pressed plunger 59, Fig. 3, mounted on the pot, through arms 55, 52, link 51 and lever 50, an over-centre spring 62 holding the parts in either position. The locking mechanism can only be operated by the plunger 59 when a roller 57 on an arm 58 is aligned with the plunger, when the machine is set for quadding or centring. After locking, a link 93 actuated by a cam causes the rod 11 to be moved downwards to squeeze the line, by means of slide 90, lip 94, cam arm 95, and lever 96 pivoted to the housing 43. The lever 96 has a lug which passes through the housing and depresses the detents. After casting a spring 100 draws slide 90 forwards to allow arm 95 to rock back as the detents 40 rise to release the pressure. The locking mechanism is released by a finger 75 on a lever 71 pivoted to the elevator 72, which finger engages a plate 70 on the lever 50 as the elevator moves to lift the line from between the jaws for distribution. A handle 19 is provided to control the grooved collar 18 for quadding or centring, and a second handle 21 to disconnect the rod 11 from both jaws for regular machine operation, and to move the roller 57 out of alignment with the plunger. Justifying-apparatus.-The justifying rods 28, 29, Fig. 1, are locked, when the machine is set for quadding or centring, by locks 101, 102 on levers 104, 106, controlled by the handle 21. Distributing-apparatus.-The first elevator 72, Fig. 1, during the first part of its movement to lift the composed line, acts by means of a finger 75 on a plate 71 pivoted to the elevator, to release the jaw-locking mechanism. Metal pots.-Clamped at 61 to one of the supporting legs 8 of the pot is a bracket 60 carrying a spring-pressed plunger 59. When the pot swings to casting position, the plunger 59 moves the jawlocking mechanism to locking position, if the machine is conditioned for quadding or centring. Specifications 433,872 and 482,047 also are referred to.
