Abstract

743,298. Type-bar-making machines. WAREING, P. F., and INTERTYPE, Ltd. Sept. 24, 1954 [Sept. 25, 1953], No. 26467/53. Class 100(3). Clamping and justifying. matrices.-In justification mechanism for a typographical linecasting machine, the justification block has a smooth upper surface and is driven upwards in two movements by the main cam shaft so as to expand the spacebands, and is maintained in a horizontal position at all times so as to expand all the spacebands equally. The right-hand jaw 12 (left in Fig. 1) is actuated by a rack 17 connected by a pinion 20 controlled by the operator to the rack actuating the jaw 13. The rack 17 is actuated by a lever 19 connected by a spring 21 to the vice jaw operating lever controlled by the cam shaft. When the justification block 24 rises, a roller 34 thereon engages a cam 33 resiliently mounted on a lever 32 carrying a spring-loaded rack pawl 35 and moves the pawl to the right clear of a rest block 37, whereupon the pawl rises, its teeth moving towards teeth 36 on the rack 17. If the machine is set for quadding or centring, the pawl engages the rack to hold the jaws and prevent justification. If the machine is set for justification, the pawl 35 is held out of engagement with the rack by means of a projection 40 thereon engaged by line-spread pawl 39 held down by a line-spread arm 38 set by the quadder control knob according to whether quadding or justification is required, and to how much slack is to be left in the line for justification. When the line has expanded the desired amount, the pawl 39 carried on the rack 17 moves clear of the arm 38 and the pawl 35 rises to engage the rack and prevent further movement of the jaws. Owing to its resilient mounting, the cam 33 can be moved without the lever 32 moving, if the latter is prevented from moving by the engagement of the pawl 35 and the rack. If the line contains no spacebands, or is a blank line, the continued rise of the roller 34 causes it to contact a bevelled face 49 on the cam 33 and thereby to drive the jaws inwards to make a metal-tight seal. The block 24 after first justification descends and the line of matrices is free to settle. Then the block 24 rises a second time, the cam 33 yielding, and equal drive being given to the spacebands 15 to cause equal spacing between the words and letters. The vice-closing cam has its shoe extended to support the roller of the vice-closing lever for an extra time and exert extra force on the jaws in assistance of the justification block in ensuring that the line is metal-tight. Additional pressure may be applied just before casting by an additional cam acting on the jaw-operating lever at a time when it is not being operated in the normal manner. A latch 41 normally holds the lever 32 in a position to keep the pawl 35 engaged with the rack, by means of a toe 42 and stepped block 43, but when the vice-closing screw is operated by a connecting rod 47 to open the jaws, a roller 44 acts on the latch to release it and disconnect the pawl. Specifications 14582/90, [Class 100], 404,231 and 450,827 are referred to.
