Abstract
715,820. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Aug. 28, 1951 [Sept. 2, 1950], No. 20254/51. Class 100 (3) Metal pumps.-In a typographical slug casting machine of the kind known under the Registered Trade Mark "Linotype"; there is incorporated in combination a stop for preventing operative movement of the pump plunger, release means controlled by one of the vice jaws, which is outwardly yieldable, and the melting pot or mould, for moving the stop to an inoperative position when the yieldable jaw is moved outwardly and the melting pot and mould are also in their fullyforward casting position, and a control device operated by the justification mechanism on excess upward movement of the justification bar during justification for preventing operation of the stop release means so as to maintain the pump stop operative. The pump-stop 17 is released by the energization of a solenoid 18 when three switches, in series in a 28 volt A.C. circuit, are all closed. Switch 29 is normally open, and is closed by lever 27 when the pressure of a fully expanded line 1 is exerted on the right-hand vice jaw 2a. Switch 19 is normally open, and is closed by screw-head 21 when the melting pot 11 is moved to correct casting position against the mould 10, when the latter is necessarily correctly positioned against the assembled line 1. A third switch, normally closed (not shown) is opened when one of the two cam-controlled spring-operated levers which operate the vertical justification rods to elevate the horizontal justification bar undergoes an excessive upward movement due to a line being too far short of the casting range or containing too few spacebands. The pump can thus operate only if the line is properly expanded, the melting pot is correctly in contact with the mould, and the mould in contact with the line. Specification 553,033 is referred to.
