This invention relates to typographical composing machines such as those known commercially under the registered trade mark Linotype, wherein key-controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line.
In such machines, depression of a key on a keyboard causes a keyrod to be moved soas to actuate escapement mechanism for releasing a matrix from a magazine and it is the primary object of the present invention, to provide an improved form of mechanism for transmitting the movement resulting from key depression to the matrix escapement mechanism.
According to the invention, a trip lever operated by the depression of a key, causes a keyrod striker, normally held by the trip lever in an inoperative position, to move into the path of a continuously reciprocating member so that the latter actuates the keyrod striker to effect operation of the matrix escapement mechanism, the trip lever thereafter automatically returning the keyrod striker to its inoperative position.
According to a further feature of the invention, means are provided whereby after the keyrod striker has moved downwardly the keyrod which effects operation of the matrix escapement mechanism and which receives a movement imparted by the keyrod striker, is caused to dwell for a short period in the raised position to allowv time for a released matrix to slide out of themagazine by gravity.

According to one constructional form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, one end of each pivotally mounted key lever l of a keyboard 2 engages in a recess 3 formed in a keybar 4 which is vertically slidable in suitable guideways 5. Above the keybar 4 is a trip lever B which is pivotally mounted at one end and is provided with a freely rotatable roller 1 at the other end. The arm. of the trip lever B rests by gravity on the top of the keybar 4 and the roller 1 presses against a vertically slidable keyrod striker B.
A suitable guideway 9 is provided for the upper end of the keyrod striker 8 which permits pivotal and sliding movement thereof, while the lower end of the keyrod striker 8 is free so that the roller 1 on the trip lever 6 normally keeps the keyrod striker il in a position inclined to the 6 vertical. The keyrod striker 8 is held against the trip lever roller 1 by means of a spring 10 and a recess H having an inclined cam surface is formed in the keyrod striker 8 to permit the trip lever roller 1 to return to normal position after the keyrod striker 8 has been raised by mechanism to be described, ready to swing the keyrod striker 8 out of the vertical position during its descent. When the keyrod striker 8 is raised it contacts with a pivoted arm l2 which in 15 turn contacts with the lower end of a keyrod l3 which actuates the escapement to release a matrix from a magazine.
The swinging of the keyrod striker 8 into the vertical position brings its lower end into the path of a vertically reciprocating bar l4 extending along the back of the keyboard 2. On each end of the bar I i is formed a stud I5 engaging in the forked end It of a pivotally mounted arm I! having a depending portion l8 carrying a cam roller l9 running in a camgroove 20 of a cam 2| mounted on a rotating shaft 22. The bar It is thus continuously and quickly reciprocated.
In operation, depression of key I on the keyboard 2 causes the keybar 4 to release the trip lever .6, thus allowing the keyrod striker v8 to swing into'the path of the reciprocating bar l4 (Figure 2), thereby raising the striker 8 which then moves the pivoted arm I 2. Movement of the arm I2 actuates the keyrod It to release a matrix from a magazine. When the trip lever 6 returns to normal position the roller 1 thereon enters the recess H in the raised keyrod striker 8, and, as the striker 8 moves downwardly the inclined surface of the recess H rides against the trip level roller 1 and the striker 8 is moved out of the vertical position.
In the constructional form of the invention. illustrated in Figures 3 and 4:, the above described mechanism is used with the following modifications.
The roller 19 on the extension it engages in a cam groove 23 of a cam 24 which is designed to give two reciprocations of the bar M per revolution of the cam shaft 22.
The before-mentioned pivoted arm [2 with Which the keyrod striker 8 contacts is formed with a downward extension 25 which, when the arm I2 is raised by the keyrod striker 8, is brought into the path of a vertically reciprocating timing bar 26 extending along the back of the keyboard 2. This timing bar 26 is connected by rods 21 at each end of the bar 26 to a shaft 28 extending along the back of the keyboard 2 to which shaft 28 is connected a pivotally mounted arm 29 having a depending portion 30 carrying a cam roller 3! engaging in a cam groove 32 in a timing cam 33 mounted on the before-mentioned rotating cam shaft 22.
In operation, depression of a key on the keyboard 2 causes a keybar 4 to release the trip lever 6, thus allowing the keyrod striker 8 to swing into the path of the reciprocating bar I4, thereby raising the striker 8 which then moves the pivoted arm I2. The movement of the pivoted arm I2 brings the downward extension 25 thereon to the front of the vertically reciprocating timing bar 26 which now moves upwardly and prevents the downward movement of the pivoted arm I2. Movement of the pivoted arm I2 actuates the keyrod I3 to release a matrix from a magazine. When the trip lever B returns to normal position the roller I thereon enters the recess II in the raised keyrod striker 8, and, as the striker moves downwardly the inclined surface of the recess II rides against the trip lever roller I and the striker 8 is moved out of the vertical position.
After the keyrod striker 8 moves downwardly, the pivoted arm I2 is held for a short period in the raised position by means of the timing bar 26, to allow time for the released matrix to slide out of the magazine by gravity. The pivoted arm I2 and keyrod I3 are subsequently lowered to free the magazine escapement. The necessary dwell of the timing bar 26 in the raised posi tion is achieved by the appropriate design of the timing cam 33 by which the timing bar 26 is operated. Similarly the upward movement of the timing bar 26 at the time when the downward extension 25 comes in front thereof is also achieved by appropriate design of the cams 24 and 33.
Having described our invention, we declare that what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted, to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to cause the keyrod striker to move into the path of the reciprocating member, and means adapted to transmit to matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.
2. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to cause the keyrod striker to move into and out of the path of the reciprocating member, transmission means adapted to transmit to matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyboard striker by the reciprocating memher and means adapted to retain said transmission means temporarily in escapementactuated position after actuation of the keyrod striker.
3. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism efiects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted triplever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member and means adapted to transmit to matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.
4. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member, transmission means adapted to transmit to matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member and means adapted to retain said transmission means temporarily in escapement-actuated position after actuation of the keyrod striker.
5. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism efiects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to cause the keyrod striker to move into the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, and means adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.
6. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects'the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted to'be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to cause the keyrod striker to move into and out of the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mecha nism, transmission means adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member, and means adapted to retain said keyrod and transmission means temporarily in escapement-actuated position after actuation of the keyrod striker.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a k'eybar' adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, and means adapted to transmit to the key rod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member operative independently of key depression, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, transmission means adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member, and means adapted to retain said keyrod and transmission means temporarily in escapement-actuated position after actuation of the keyrod striker.
9. In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the 'release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depres sion to cause the keyrod striker tomove into the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism and a pivoted arm adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to cause the keyrod striker to move into and out of the path of the reciprocating member a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, a pivoted arm adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted tothe keyrod striker by the reciprocating member and means adapted to retain said keyrod and pivoted arm temporarily in active position after actuation of the keyrod striker.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism and a pivoted arm adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the triplever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, a pivoted arm adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member and means adapted to retain said keyrod and pivoted arm temporarily in active position after actuation of'the keyrod striker.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a roller on the trip lever adapted to bear against the inclined cam surface of a recess in the keyrod striker to return the keyrod striker to inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member and means adapted to transmit the matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyrodstriker by the reciprocating member.

A combination as set forth in claim 3 wherein the reciprocating member comprises a bar extending along the back of the keyboard and formed on each end with a stud engaging in the forked end of a pivotally mounted arm having a depending portion carrying a cam roller running in a camgroove of a cam mounted on a rotating shaft.
15. A combination as set forth in claim 3 wherein the keyrod striker is held against the trip lever by means of a spring and is supported at its upper end in a. guideway which permits pivoted and sliding movement thereof while its lower end is free so that the trip lever normally keeps the keyrod striker in a position inclined to the vertical.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to cause the keyrod striker to move into and out of the path of the reciprocating member transmission means adapted to transmit to matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating memher, and a vertically reciprocating timing bar able by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into the path of the reciprocating member, means adapted to transmit to matrix escapement mechanism movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member, and a vertically reciprocating timing bar adapted to retain said transmission means temporarily in active position after actuation of the keyrod striker.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a continuously reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a pivoted trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position, a keybar adapted to support the trip lever against gravity and operable by key depression to trip the keyrod striker into-the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, a pivoted cam adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member and a vertically reciprocating timing bar adapted to retain said keyrod and pivoted arm temporarily in active position after actuation of the keyrod striker.
19. A combination as set forth in claim 18 wherein the pivoted arm is formed with a downward extension which, when the arm is raised by the. keyrod striker, is brought into the path of the vertically reciprocating timing bar.

A combination as set forth in claim 18 wherein the vertically reciprocating timing bar extends along the back of the keyboard and is connected by rods at each end of the bar to a shaft extending along the back of the keyboard to which shaft is connected a pivotally mounted arm having a depending portion carrying a cam roller engaging in a cam groove in a timing cam mounted on a rotating shaft.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to permit the keyrod striker to move into the path of the reciprocating member, said trip lever being subsequently operable by key release to cause the keyrod striker to move out of the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted-to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, and transmission means adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member.

In a typographical composing machine wherein key controlled mechanism effects the release of matrices from a magazine for composition in line, the combination of a reciprocating member, a keyrod striker adapted to be moved by the reciprocating member, a trip lever normally retaining the keyrod striker in inoperative position and operable by key depression to permit the keyrod striker to move into the path of the reciprocating member, said trip lever being subsequently operable by key release to cause the keyrod striker to move out of the path of the reciprocating member, a keyrod adapted to actuate matrix escapement mechanism, transmission means adapted to transmit to the keyrod movement imparted to the keyrod striker by the reciprocating member, and means adapted to retain said keyrod and transmission means temporarily in es-, capement-actuated position after actuation of the keyrod striker.
