To all to 710m it may concern Be it known that i, HERBERT ELLIS, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at l to l, Bern-am street, Elingapore, Straits Settlements, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Composing Tabular Matter in Typographical Composing and Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typographical composing and casting machines particularly those known under the registered trade mark Linotype and kindred machines, and it has for its object to provide new or improved means whereby tabular matter can be composed and cast in such machines, and whereby said matter shall be more accurately alineable than has generally been the case with similar tabular matter heretofore produced in like machines.
As is well known, the product of these machines is a cast type bar or slug bearing on one edge a line of printing characters produced from matrices assembled in order ofv composition and conveyed to the casting mechanism by a so-called first elevator.
In composing tabular matter, it is custommy to insert in the line between the separate measures thereof, a measure quad, leader matrix or rule matrix, (all of which are, for convenience, included in the term special matrix hereinafter used) the matter of each separate measure being spaced with the usual expansible space bars. When the line so composed is justiiied in the known manner, the expansion of the space bars: in the 'sparate measures is not necessarily uniform and may give rie to a shifting of the special matrices dividing the separate measures, thereby throwing such measures out of vertical. alinement in different slugs.
has been proposed to overcome this ditliculty by providing the special matrix with a projection adapted to engage a recess in the mold plate, so that the position of such matrix in the line will be maintained during justification or to provide apartition in the mold having a projection adaptedto engage a recess in the special matrix for the :a me purpose, the separate measures of a line in the latter case being cast as separate short slugs between the partitions in the mold. Both these methods depend for their operation on the movement of the mold up to the composed line to secure engagement of the respective recesses and projections, and involve for any change ofmeasure, a change of the recessed mold plate, or an alteration of the position of the partitions in the mold.
The present invention provides an improved form of special matrix, and means controlled by the movement of the first elevator for retaining the special matrix in its position in the line during justification, such means being readily adjustable from the front of the machine for change of measure without necessitating any alteration of the mold or mold plate.
The invention will. now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, throughout the several figures of which like reference numerals are used to indicate like or corresponding parts. In these drawmgs I Figure 1 shows in plan, elevation, and central vertical section, one of the improved special matrices;
Fig. 2 is an elevation, as seen from the left hand side of the machine, of the first elevator and vise frame, showing the application thereto of one constructional form of the invention;
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a front elevation and plan of Fig. 2,, and Figs. 5 and '6 are views respectively similar to Figs. 2 and 3, illustrating'an alternative constructional form.
The special matrix 1 (Fig. 1) which, as mentioned above, may be either a measure quad, leader matrix, or rule matrix, is according to the present invention formed with a central aperture 2, extending from the top to bottom of the matrix and slightly flared at the upper end, for the reception of a dog or plunger which is mover. into and out of engagement with it through the descent and ascent of the first elevator 3.
For the last-mentioned purpose, the first elevator 3 may be provided with a fixed cam 41 in a position to engage one end of a lever arm 5 whose other end is fast to a rockshaft 6, on which is adjustably mounted a lever 7 carryingthe plunger 8. The rockshaft 6 is supported in bracket bearings 9, 10, carried on the front of the vise frame 11, and is provided with a torsion spring 12 which constantly tends to turn the shaft counter-clockwise, regarded as in Fig. 2, to bring the lever 7 into the position shown in full lines 1n that figure. The location of the shaft 6 and the length of the lever 7 are such that when that lever is in the last mentioned position, the plunger 8 will enter the channel 13 of the first elevator 3, which will then be holding the composed line of matrices 14 ready for justification between the two vise jaws 15,16 (Fig. 3.)
In order to guide the plunger 8 into the aperture 2 of the special matrix 1, the lever 7 is mounted on the shaft 6 between the two arms of a yoke-lever 17 in the free end of which is provided a guide-way 18 for the plunger 8. The upper edges of the elevator channel 13 may, if desired, be rounded as shown to receive between them the correspondingly rounded end of the yoke-lever 17 Both the lever 7 and yoke-lever 17 are mounted on a sleeve 19 on the shaft 6, between a collar 20 integral with the sleeve and a collar 21 secured thereto by a setscrew 22. The sleeve 19 is axially adjustable along the shaft 6 but angularly fast thereto,-being provided with a key 23 secured within the collar 20 by a clampingsc'rew 24 and engaging a long keyway 25 in the shaft 6. The sleeve 19 is provided with a key 26 tightly engaging the keyway 19 of lever 7 and loosely engaging the keyway 50 of yoke-lever 17. This allows slight relative movement as between lever 7 and yoke-lever 17 which movement is limited by nuts 27 on a stud 28 fast upon the yoke-lever 17 and penetrating a slot 29 in the lever 7. The stud 28 is encircled by a helical spring 30 constantly tending to keep the lever 7 and yoke-lever 17 apart to the full extent permitted by the said nuts 27, the movement of the lever 7 being conimunicated to the yoke-lever 1'7 through the said spring.
The levers 7, 17 are normally retained in the inoperative position in which they are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by a spring detent, such as a blade sprin 31, secured to a stationary bracket 18 and engaging the lever arm 5, a cam 32 operatively fast to the first elevator 3 being provided for the purpose of releasing this detent during the descent of said elevator.
A special matrix 1 having been composed into the correct position in the line and the lever 7 and yoke-lever 17 having been set in a corresponding position on the shaft 6, the invention operates as follows As the first elevator 3 descends to convey the composed line of matrices 14: and space-bars 33 to the casting position between the vise aws 15, .16, the cam 32 releases the detent 31, whereupon the roller 34 on the leverarm 5 will ride over the surface of the cam a under the influence of the torsion spring 12, until it reaches the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the lever 7 being at the same time rocked over the first elevator head. Acting through the spring 30, the lever 7 carries the yoke-lever 17 before it until the end of the latter is brought to rest by contact with the elevator 3, the plunger 8, then protruding into the said channel is, by further movement of the lever 7, and guided by the head of the yoke lever 17, depressed into the aperture 2 of the special matrix 1, which latter is thus held firmly in the line, and provides a fixed abutment therein, so that when the justification plates 35 (Fig. 3) come into operation, each measure will be retained at its proper length.
On the ascent of the first elevator 3, the shaft 6 is rocked clockwise against the action of the torsion spring 12 through the cam 4 acting on the lever 5. Uwing to the above mentioned loose engagement of the key 26 with the yoke-lever 17 the movement of the latter is delayed so that it remains in position on the elevator 3 to act as a guide until the plunger 8 is nearly witl1- drawn from the matrix, approximately vertical motion of the plunger 8 being assured by its pin-and-slot connections 46, 4:7 to the respective levers 7 17 On the elevator 33 reaching its uppermost position, (in which it is indicated in dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 2) the lever arm 5 is again engaged by the detent 31 and thereby retained in its inoperative position until the next descent of the elevator 3.
The shaft 6 may be conveniently mounted in the bracket bearings 9, 10, by means of screws 36, the ends of which engage in annular grooves 37 in the respective ends of the shaft, so that the latter is permitted to turn but held against axial movement.
According to the constructional form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the fixed cam 1 of the previous arrangement is substituted by a cam pivoted at 54L to a bracket 53 on the elevator 3, operating in conjunction with a switch-cam 4O pivoted to 53. The cam 38 is held in its normal posi tion against a stop 52, as indicated in dotand-dash lines in Fig. 5, by a spring l2, and it is formed with a. depending tailpiece 43 which cooperates with a roller 1 1 rotating on a stationary pivot secured to the bracket 9, to rock the cam about its pivot 55% during the ascent of the elevator 3.
Apart from the modified form of cam just referred to, the present. construction only differs from that previously described in respect of consequential modifications of the lever-arm 5 and cam 32, the formerbeing in this case necessarily somewhat longer than in the before-described arrangement, and the latter being mounted on a bracket 51 upstanding extension 41 of the bracket amaze provided for it on the elevator 8 instead of on the side of the main cam. The operation is as follows On the descent of the elevator 3, the cam 82 releases the detent 31, whereupon the roller 34: on the lever arm 5 rides first over the surface of the cam 38 as the latter descends, then up the face of the switch cam 40, and over the top of the latter into contact with the rear portion of the cam 38. By these means yoke-lever 17 is prevented from contacting with the elevator 3 until the latter is in its lowest position, and the plunger 8 is directly introduced into the elevator channel 13. W hen the first elevator 3 ascends, the tail-piece 43 contacting with the roller 44: causes the rear portion of the cam 38 to rise quickly, thus efi'ecting a rapid withdrawal of the plunger 8 from the special matrix 1. The roller 34 thereafter rides over the surface of the cam 38, passing under the switch-cam 42, until the detent 31 again comes into action to retain the arm 5 and levers 7, 17, in their uppermost posi tion.
The tail 4-3 is preferably of sufiicient length to control, by contact with the roller 4%, the position of the cam 88 during its ascent, while there is any tendency for the pressure of the roller 3a to turn it rearward about its pivot 54, after which the spring 42 returns it to its normal position against the stop 52.
As a convenient means of putting the apparatus out of action when the machine is not being used for the composition of tabular matter, the cam 32 may be removably or adjustably mounted so that it can be rendered inoperative when desired.
Whenever a change is required to be made in the different measures of an assembled line, this may be provided for by adjusting the sleeve 19 to the desired position along the rock-shaft 6, and composing the special matrix 1 into the line at a correspondingly different position, and for lines to be divided into more than two separate measures, a plurality of plungers may be provided, either each carried independently of the others, or all guided (and laterally adjustable or not) in the same yoke-lever.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the. precise construction hereinhefore described, as many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, the special. matrices may each be iormedof two resiliently connected ails between which the plunger enters, and which are pressed together during the justification of the line.
Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. in a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a stationary organ in which a composed line is held in casting position, a. movable organ and a channel therein in which a composed line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of a plunger adapted to be depressed into and withdrawn from said channel, and means controlled by the movable organ adapted to effect such depression and withdrawal.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a stationary organ in which a composed line is held in casting position, a movable organ and a channel therein in which a composed line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of a plunger, means controlled by the movable organ adapted to depress the plunger into said channel, and means mounted on the movable organ adapted to eiiect the withdrawal of the plunger from said channel.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a stationary organ in which a composed line is held in casting position, a movable organ and a channel therein in which a composed line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of a plunger, means constantly tending to depress the plunger into the channel, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward the stationary organ, and means mounted on the movable organ adapted toetiect the withdrawal of the plunger from the channel during the movement of said organ away from the stationary organ.
5. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures oi the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of a plunger adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from said matrix, and means controlled by the movable organ adapted to effect such en 'agement and disengagement.

8. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, matrix di; viding the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable or gan in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of a plunger, means constantly tending to move the plunger into engagement with said matrix, a detent normally rendering such in ans inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward the stationar organ, and means mounted on the movable organ adapted to move the plunger out of engagement with said matrix during the movement of said organ from the stationary organ.

In a'typoeraphical composing and ens"- ing machine, tne combination with a stationary organ in which a composed line is held in casting position, a movable organ and a channel therein in which a composed line is conveyed to and from the stationary of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a lever angularly fast on the shaft, a plunger carried by the lever adapted to be depressed into and withdrawn from said channel by the rockin of the shaft, in respectively opposite directions, a lever arm fast on the shaft and means mounted on the movable organ adapted in conjunction with Said lever arm to control the rocking of the shaft.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a stationary organ in which a composed line is held in casting position, a movable organ and a channel therein in which a composed line is conveyed to and from the stationary rgan, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary o n, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a lever angularly fast on the shaft, a plunger carried by the lever, means constantly tending to rock the shaft in one direction to depress the plunger into said channel, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, and means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to reease the detent during the movement of said organ toward the stationary organ.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a stationary organ in which a composed line is held in casting position, a movable organ and a channel therein in which a composed line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, lever angularly fast on the shaft, a alunger carried by the lever, means constantly tend ng to rock the shaft in one direction to depress the plunger into said channel, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward the stationary organ, a lever arm fast on the shaft, and means mounted on the movable organ adapted in conjunction with said lever arm to control the said rocking of the shaft and, during the movement of said organ from the stationary organ, to rock the shaft in the opposite direction to withdraw the plunger.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured. to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a lever angularly fast on the shaft, a yoke-lever mounted co-axially with said lever with a capacity for limited angular motion relatively thereto, a plunger, a pin and slot connecting the plunger to the lever, a guid -way in the yoke-lever, a pin and slot connecting the guide-way and plunger, a resilient connec tion between the plunger lever, and yokelever adapted to transmit motion of the former to the latter, means adapted to rock the shaft in one direction to engage the plunger with the matrix, and means on the movable organ adapted to control such rocl ing and to rock the shaft in the opposite direction to disengage the plunger from the matrix.
31. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a lever angularly fast and axially adjustable on the shaft, an axially adjustable yoke-lever mounted on said shaft with a capacity for limited angular motion relatively thereto, a plunger, a pin and slot connecting the piunger to the lever, a guide-way in the yol lever, a pin and slot connecting the guide-- way and plunger, a resilient connection between the plunger lever and yoke-lever adapted to transmit motion of the former to the latter, means constantly tending to rock the shaft in one direction to engage the plunger with the matrix, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward. the stationary organ, a lever arm fast on the shaft, and means mounted on the movable or an adapted in conjunction with said leverarm to control the said rocking of the shaft and, during the movement of said organ away from the stationary organ, to rock the shaft in the opposite direction to disengage the plunger from the matrix.
32. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in castingposition and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a lever angularly fast and axially adjustable on the shaft, an axially adjustable yoke-lever mounted on said shaft with a capacity for limited angular motion relatively thereto, a plunger, a pin and slot connecting the plunger to'the lever, a guide-way in the yoke-lever, a pin and slot connecting the guide-way and plunger, a resilientconnection between the plunger lever and yokelever adapted to transmit motion of the former to the latter, means constantly tending to rock the shaft in one direction to engage the plunger with the matrix, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward the sta' tionary organ, a lever arm fast on theshaft, a cam pivotally mounted on the movable organ adapted to act on said lever arm to control. the rocking of and to rock the shaft during the movement of said organ respectively toward and away from the stationary organ, means adapted to rock said cam about its pivot during the last-named movement, and a switch cam adapted to cooperate with said cam during the first-named movement.
33. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a sleeve angularly fast and axially adjustable on the shaft, a lever angularly fast on the sleeve, a yoke-lever mounted on the sleeve with a capacity for limited angular motion relatively thereto, a plunger carried by thelever adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from said matrix by the rocking of the shaft in respectively opposite directions, a guideway in the yoke-lever for the plunger, a resilient connection between the plunger lever and yoke-lever adapted to transmit motion of the former to the latter, means adapted to rock the shaft in one direction, and means on the movable organ adapted to control such rocking and to rock the shaft in the opposite direction.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a sleeve angularly fast and axially adjustable on the shaft, a lever angularly fast on the sleeve, a yoke-lever mounted on the sleeve with a capacity for limited angular motion relatively thereto, a plunger carried by the lever adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from said matrix by the rocking of the shaft in respectively opposite directions, a guide-way in the yoke-lever, for the plunger, a resilient connection between the plunger lever and yoke-lever adapted to transmit motion ofithe former to the latter, means constantly tending to rock the shaft in one direction, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward the stationary organ, a lever arm fast on the shaft, and means mounted on the movable organ adapted in conjunction with said lever arm to control the lastnamed rocking of the shaft and, during the movement of said organ away from the stationary organ, to rock the shaft in the opposite direction.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matr x dividing the separate measures of the sald line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking 111 said bearings, a sleeve angularly fast and axially 2tCl]11St2Lbl6 on the shaft, a lever angularly fast on the slot connecting the plunger to the lever, a
guide-way in the yoke-lever, a pin and slot connecting the gnideway and plunger, a resilient connection between the plunger lever and yokelever adapted to transmit motion of the former to the latter, means adapted to rock the shaft in one direction, and means on the movable organ adapted to control such rocking and to rock the shaft in the opposite direction.

In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination with a composed line of tabular matter, a matrix dividing the separate measures of the said line, a stationary organ in which the line is held in casting position and a movable organ in which the line is conveyed to and from the stationary organ, of shaft bearings secured to the stationary organ, a shaft capable of rocking in said bearings, a sleeve angularly fast and axially adjustable on the shaft, a lever angularly fast on the sleeve, a yoke-lever mounted on the sleeve with a capacity for limited angular motion relatively thereto, a plunger adapted to be en gaged with and disengaged from said matrix by the rocking of the shaft in respectively opposite directions, a pin and slot connecting the plunger to the lever, a guide-way in the yoke-lever, a pin and slot connecting the guide-way and plunger, a resilient connection between the plunger lever and yokelever adapted to transmit motion of-the former to the latter, means constantly tending to rock the shaft in one direction, a detent normally rendering such means inoperative, means operatively fast to the movable organ adapted to release the detent during the movement of said organ toward the stationary organ, a lever arm fast on the shaft, a cam pivotally mounted on the movable organ adapted to act on said lever arm to control the rocking of and to rock the shaft during the movement of said organ respectively toward and away from the stationary organ, means adapted to rock said cam about its pivot during the last-named movement, and a switch cam adapted to cooperate with the said cam during the firstnamed movement.
37. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination of a composed line containing a matrix dividing the separate measures of the line, means for conveying the composed line to and from casting position, and a holding device movably mounted in the machine frame so as to be engaged With and disengaged from said matrix before and after casting, respectively, for the purpose described.
38. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination of a composed line containing a matrix dividing the separate measures of the line, means for conveying the composed line to and from casting position, and a holding device movably mounted in the machine frame so as to be engaged With and disengaged from said matrix before and after casting, respectively, the said holding device being adjustable in position to correspond With different loca tions of the matrix in the composed line.
39. In a typographical composing and casting machine, the combination of a composed line containing a matrix dividing the separate measures of the line, means for conveying the composed line to. and. from easting position, a holding device movably mounted in the machine frame so as to be engaged With and disengaged from said matrix, and automaticmeans for effecting the engaging and disengaging movements of the holding device before and after casting, respectively.
