Abstract
541,166. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Feb. 1, 1941. No. 1338. Convention date, July 27, 1940. [Class 100 (iii)] Ejecting type-bars.-In means for automatically adjusting the ejector in accordance with the length of the mould, the adjustment of the blade is effected during the first machine cycle after the mould has been changed by means such as a cam on the cam-shaft of the machine, and the proper number of bladesections is determined by means associated with the mould. The blade-sections C<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 2, are selected by a vertically sliding bar C<SP>5</SP> operated by a spring- controlled lever D, which has at its forward end a pawl D<SP>2</SP> adapted to engage ratchet-teeth D3 on a pivoted arm D<SP>4</SP>, When the mould-disc driving- pinion B is drawn forwards by means of its hand-wheel B<SP>5</SP> for the purpose of changing the mould, an arm E, which is rocked by the pinion, moves the arm D' out of engagement with the pawl D<SP>2</SP>, and the bar C<SP>5</SP> is withdrawn by its spring to its lowest position, which corresponds to an ejector of minimum width. The selection of the blade-sections is determined by the left-hand liner a<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 1, of each mould, the liner having at its outer end a projection a<SP>4</SP>, the length of which depends on the size of the mould-slot. After the mould has been changed and the machine started, a slide G is advanced against the projecting end of the liner by a lever F<SP>4</SP>, to which is connected a link F<SP>4</SP>. A spring H<SP>3</SP> connects the link F<SP>4</SP> to a lever H<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, which is operated by a cam M<SP>1</SP> on the camshaft of the machine. The lower end of the link F<SP>4</SP> is connected by a lever F<SP>1</SP> and a rod F to the lever D, by which the ejector selecting-bar C<SP>5</SP> is adjusted. The movement of the lever D draws the pawl D<SP>2</SP> over the ratchet-teeth D<SP>3</SP>, so that the lever is locked in adjusted position. The link F<SP>4</SP> is locked out of action, except when a change of mould is to be made, by a pivoted latch-bar J, which engages a shoulder F' on the link. The latch-bar is withdrawn when the pinion B is drawn forwards prior to a change of mould. A sliding plate K, Fig. 1, is movable by hand into engagement with the teeth of the mould-disc A, so as to lock the disc against rotation when it is drawn forwards out of gear with the turning-pinion B. The setting of the ejector is indicated by a bar L connected to the lever D and bearing symbols which are visible through a hole L<SP>2</SP> in a plate L<SP>1</SP>.
