Abstract
410,514. Type-bar-making machines. HART, H., 9, Kingsway, London.-(Mergenthaler Linotype Co. ; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 18, 1932, No. 32617. [Class 100 (iii).] Quadding-apparatus.-Means are provided for automatically closing the mould at predetermined cycles of operation of the machine for the purpose of casting blank slugs, such as are required for supporting the overhanging printing-faces of L-shaped or T-shaped printing- slugs. The left-hand vice-jaw 1 is operated to close the mould by a lever 15 and a cam 11 mounted on a Geneva stop-disc 8, which is operated by the mould-wheel during its rotation. The stop-disc 8 has four radial slots 10, which are successively engaged by a pin 23 located at the leading end of one of the moulds. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the cam 11 has two opposed high portions, so that the jaw 1 is operated to close the mould at alternate cycles of the machine, the closing movement occurring during the rotation of the mould-wheel from casting to ejecting position. The cam 11 may be replaced by others of different contour, so as to effect the casting of, say, two printing- slugs followed by two blank slugs, or of one printing-slug followed by three blank slugs, or of one blank slug followed by three printing- slugs. The pin 23 is detachable and may be associated with any one of the moulds on the mould-wheel. To enable the jaw 1 to be released from the closing-device, the lower arm of the lever 15 is formed in two parts, which may be coupled together by means of a retractable plunger, so as to move as one member.
