residing in London, lngland.l have jointly invented certain new and uselul Improvements in Typographic Machines, ofwhich the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to typographie ma,- chines ot the character in which loose matrices contained in a magazine are assembled in line by keyboard mechanism7 transferred after justification to a casting mechanism, separated and presented singly to a mould, anda justified line of individual types produced therefrom.
rEhe object oit this invention is to increase the productive capacity of such machines bv the employment oit character matrices each having more than one sepa fately usable character indented on the same working` lace, as 'tor;example, the ordinary body character, and in addition. the corresponding italic letter, small capitalor other secondary character or characters.
The kind oli typographie machineto which the present invention is particularly applicable has beendescribed in the specifications ot' British Patents Nos. 1903 of 1900 and 11870 ot 1913. and the part of the such inachines which is involved is the mechanism ior presenting the matricesto them ould for casting purposes, such mechanism being modilied by this invention so as to present the matrix to the mould in the position appro,- priate to the particular character on the matrix: which it is desired to reproduce in type.
lWith this object the presentation plunger or a part thereof is made capable Yof movement not only longitudinally or in a horizontal direction, but also transversely or in a verticalidirection. y
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings as applied to matrices having two characters indented in vertical relation with each other on the working face. `With two character matrices there are two possible casting positions rof the matrix `determined by the position of an arresting stop 710, which co-operatesL with a vertically slidable head al on the presentation plunger a. For example. tor the lower oit' the two asting positions the head al of the plunger, inipelled downwards by suitable springurged linkage,niay engage a fixed aligning stop c on the .mould, whilel for the higher casting position it is arrested at the higher level4 by an aligning bar Z` carried by'the plunger a and projected to interpose the arresting stop between the mould stop 0 and the plunger head a. The change from one position to the otherA is automatically effected as a consequence of Ithe introduction by the operator oi2 a controller or matrix blank Z into the lineoi:v matrices at the point at which the change is desired as hereinafter described. In the rearward position of the presentation ifilunger a, theplunger head a is always aligned with the separationchannel e to receive the matricesk therefrom, and upon the return ol' the presentationplunger after the casting operation, the downward pressure, due to spring fo acting through lever if on the plunger head a', is released to enable the latter to be returnedy automatically (it necessary) to vertical alignment with the separation channel. This vreturn is effected by engagement of the'inclined ltail f ot the lever f with a preferably adjustable stop g on the trame oit` the machine. i'liccurate alignment o the head of the presentation plunger with respect to the separation channel is effected by means of a chamirered projectione2 on the head of the` presentation plunger entering anotch e inthe lovver bar oit the separation channel,
ln general practice ,it willv happen that most oit the matrices will be used Aat the higher level, i.` e. that at which the primary or most commonly used characters are in the casting position. In this case thehead a ot' the presentation plunger i` will move to and from the mouldwithout any sensible vertical movement. ln the case of the secondary characters being used,theplunger head if and with it thev matrixwill be moved downwards in its passage tothe mould@7 by an amount equal to the vertical distance VGo between the two characters and upwards again on its return to the separation chan* nel. n For effecting these objects the aligning bar b is slidably mounted in the main body of the presentation plunger a` and travels with it in such a way that although normally the aligning bar is in the forward position in which it is interposed between the aligning stop 0 of the mould c and the under side of the heada of the plunger when the latter is against the mould, it is adapted, when desired to produce a secondary character, to be moved rearwardly, in which case under the pressure of the spring-- urged linkage previously referred to and consisting of the compression spring fo, spring-urged plunger and lever f, the head of the plunger `will be lowered until it contacts directly with the aligning stop c" of the mould.
The foregoing movement of the aligning bar and the selection of either its forward or rearward position, according to whether a primary or secondary character is required, is accomplished in the following manner.
The aligning b'ar Z) is urged by a spring Zi rearwardly on to a cam 7i mounted `on the body ofthe presentation plunger a, and with the aligning bar 6 partaking of its reciprocating movement, the moving with the presentation plunger' and also the aligningbar fwhich, however, has an independent movement controlled by the cam. Mounted roaxially with the cam 7i and fastened to it is aratchet disc r having as many teeth 7a2 as there are projections and depressions on thecam. A rotary movement of the ratchet 7L tooth by tooth will cause the aligning barto be alternately moved forward and retracted. A ratchet pawl o mounted on a slide z' which receives motion from the cam shaft y' driving'the presentation plunger and rcooperating parts is adapted to impart tl is rotary movement to the ratchet wheel 71, and cam 7L when the latter is in a position coi responding with the rearward position of the presentation plunger. Further, the cams fr, l controlling the movements ofthe presentation plunger and the ratchet pawl slide respectively are in such timed relationship that during the free reciprocation of the presentation plunger movement is imparted to the ratchet slide a' only when the presenta1 tion plunger is in its forward position, and. consequently in the normal working of the machine no' relative movement is imparted to" the aligning bar Z7, and primary or secondary letters will continue to be cast according to whether the aligning bar is in its forward or rearward position as previously explained.
Whenever it is necessary, in the course ot composition, to change from one face or font to another, the operator by means of a linger key, assembles a controller al in the line of matrices at the point where the change is desired. These controllers, which are contained in a channel in the matrix magazine, are of metal and are similar in configuration and thickness to the matrices, except that they contain no character and have one of their lugs or ears-preferably 4that at the lower right hand corner dO-of increased height.
The controller d, having been separated in due course and pushed into the head o. of the presentation plunger, now co-operates by means of its abnormal lug d0 with a projection e2 on the adjacent rail of the separa tion channel in such a manner that the prerentation plunger a is held stationary against the action of the spring Ico acting on the cam lever lo impelling it towards the mould. Under these conditions, as previously explained, the ratchet pawl if will engage with the ratchet wheel t and present either a projection or a depression of the cam lr. to the aligning bar Z), the position of which will be altered correspondingly. It will thus be seen that the insertion of a single con troller into the line of matrices is all that is required `to bring about the required change in character to be cast. j
lt is lto be understood that during the cycle of the machine in which the presentation plunger is held inoperative by the controller, the movable blade of the mould. which may bevconstructed according to the patent specifications previously mentioned, will in the absence of a matrix `on the face of the mould, completely close the aperture of the mould, thus etfectually preventing any splashing of the metal.
Having thus described the nature of the invention and the best means we know of carrying thesame into practical effect, we claim i i l. In typographie machines of the kind herein referred to, the combination with a type mould of character matrices each having more than one separately usable char acter on the same working face,imeans adapted to present each matrix` to the mould in position to effect the casting of any one of the characters and means comprising a blank matrix or controller introduced into the line of matrices' operating to determine which of said characters is4 presented in the casting position. j i A v2. In' typographic machines of the kind lherein referred to, the combination-with a type mould of a multiple character matrix and means for presenting said matrix to the mould in alternative positions, said means comprising a presentation plunger having a transverse movement as well as a longitudinal movement.
3. In an apparatus as claimed in claim 2,
a presentation plunger having a head transversely movable thereon, a mould having an aligning stop cooperating With the head of the presentation plunger, an aligning bar slidably mounted on said plunger and adapted to be interposed between the head ot the presentation plunger and the aligning stop, and means operating to Withdraw the aligning bar and permit the head or the presentation plunger to abut directly on the align ing stop.
4. In typographie machines ot the kind herein referred to, the combination with a type mould of a multiple character matrix and means for presenting said matrix to the mould in alternative positions, said means comprising a. presentation plunger having a head transversely movable thereon, means Ytor reciprocating the presentation plunger longitudinally, a mould stop cooperating with the transversely movable head of the presentation plunger to arrest the character matrix carried thereby in one of the said alternative positions, and means carried by the presentation plunger and cooperating with the mould stop to arrest the character matrix carried by the presentation plunger in another of the said alternative positions.
5. In typographie machines of the kind herein described, the combination with a type mould of a multiple character matrix and means 'for presenting said matrix to the mould in alternative positions, said means comprising a reciprocating presentation plunger, a transversely movable head on said presentation plunger adapted to carry the matrix, a stop reciprocating With the presentation plunger and normally operating to arrest the transversely movable head or the plunger, means operating to Withdraw said stop out of engagement with said head when the forward movement of the presentation plunger is arrested, a blank matrix or controller adapted to be introduced into the line or" matrices, and a stop adapted to engage the controller and arrest the forward movement of the presentation plunger.
6. In typographie machines of the kind herein described, the combination with a type mould of a multiple character matrix and means for presenting said matrix to the mould in alternative positions, said means comprising a stop normally operative to arrest the matrix in one of said positions, a blank matrix adapted to be introduced into the line of matrices, and means for changing the position of said stop controlled by said blank matrix.
