[Class 100 (iii).] Clamping matrices.-In a type - bar - making machine having a recess or other marking means on the vice-jaw facing the mould, which in casting produces a corresponding mark on the slug as a guide in sawing the slug to the desired length, means are provided whereby the marking means on the vicejaw can be made ineffective either by hand, or automatically in sliding the vice-jaws towards each other. The vice-jaw may be provided with a cylindrical piece seated in a recess therein, the front face being in the same plane as the casting surface of the jaw, and provided with a hole which normally produces a projection on the slug. The hole is eccentrically situated on the cylindrical piece, so that by rotating the latter the hole can be brought out of the plane of the mould. To facilitate this movement, a manually-operable slide is attached to one side of the cylindrical member and is mounted in a recess in the vice-jaw. In the construction shown in the Figure, the inner surface of the jaw a is formed with a hole c which is closed by a pin h when the jaw is moved to the left away from a stop r, for casting blank slugs or the like. The pin h is normally withdrawn by a spring i but is pressed in, as the jaw moves and the stop q is released, by a spring p operating a pivoted lever m which is connected to a lever k attached to the jaw a by a pivot pin l. The pin l is shaped as a cam and engages the top of the pin h, so that as the jaw moves to the left, the pin l is rotated and depresses the pin h to close the aperture c.
