Abstract

466,138. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., BILLINGTON, J. E., and SCOTT, R. H. Nov. 23, 1935, No. 32531. [Class 100 (iii)] Clamping matrices; moulds.-In means for casting type-bars having low portions for supporting printing-plates, means, such as filling- pieces, are mounted adjacent to one or both of the vice-jaws, and are detachably securable thereto when desired, in order to reduce the depth of the casting-slot. Each filling-piece consists of a strip a, slidably mounted in a bracket b fixed to the vice-frame c. The strip may be detachably secured to the jaw d by means of a lug f, which extends through an open slot g in the jaw,.and is engaged by a pin h passing through a hole in the lug. The pin is operated by means of a lever i, and is held in either position by a detent. When disconnected, the strip s remains stationary during the quadding movement of the jaw. The strips are interchangeable, to suit different thicknesses of slug and varying heights of the blank portions. The mould-liners are of reduced width and the part of the mould beyond them may be widened to facilitate entrance of the strips.
