Abstract
447,831. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO., 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, and ACKERMAN, W., Towners, both in New York, U.S.A. Nov. 26, 1934, No. 33907. Addition to 365,289. [Class 100 (iii)] Trimming type-bars; moulds.-In the trimming-mechanism described in the parent Specification, in which an individual reciprocating knife is employed with each mould for trimming the back of the slug, the knife-slide is operated by means arranged to intercept it during the rotation of the mould-disc. This enables the guides of the knife-slide to be confined within the limits of the mould, so that a longer mould can be used for casting the long low slugs used in printing telephone books &c. The mould is formed of lower and upper parts B<1> B<2>, Fig. 12, the end walls being integral with the lower part, so that separate liners are not required. The mould is of greatly reduced depth, and its back is spaced from the front face of the mould disc C, Fig. 13, so as to leave a recess B<4>, in which the knife-slide B<6> can move. During the rotation of the mould from casting to ejecting position, a pin B<7> on the knife-slide is arrested by a stop E, Fig. 1, which is projected into its path. The stop E slides in a bracket E<1> mounted on the mould-disc slide, and is advanced towards the disc and retracted therefrom by levers and a cam E<15> on the hub of the disc. The stop is also moved laterally to compensate for the varying distance of the pin B' from the centre of the mould-disc as the knife-slide traverses the mould. This is effected by additional cams, which impart a reciprocating movement to the bracket E<1>. In order to return the knife-slide to normal position before ejection of the slug, an actuating-element F is projected towards the mould-disc and behind the pin E'. After the retraction of the stop B<7>, the element F is given a speed considerably faster than that of the mould-disc, so as to carry the knife-slide before it. This is effected by a lever G, mounted on the mould-disc slide and linked to the element F. The lever G is operated against the tension of a spring G' by a lever G<3>, an arm G<4> of which is engaged by a cam G<6> on the mould-disc. The pin-actuating element F is constrained to move in the same path as the pin B<7> by a curved slot F<1> in a bracket F<2> secured to the mould-disc slide, and is moved towards and away from the disc by engagement with suitably formed grooves in the upper and lower faces of the slot F<1>. Displacement of the slug in the mould during trimming is prevented by pins h<3>, Fig. 12, which are projected into the mould-cavity during casting by a parallel-motion bar H<1> operated by a cam. The two end pins are projected right across the mould, and produce notches in the ends of the slugs, to receive ribs on the trays or galleys in which the slugs are stacked.
