Alining matrices.-For alining matrices in the casting position, alining-lugs are provided for each character on the same edge as the character. The alining-lugs 9, 10, Fig. 2, may be outside the normal body width of the matrix and of the same reduced thickness as the lugs 12, 13 ; or, as shown in Fig. 1, the body may be narrower than usual, the alining-lugs being within the normal width, and of the same thickness as the body. The lugs 14, 15 for engaging the magazine grooves are of reduced thickness. The matrices are alined by means of a plate 16 provided with ledges 19, 20 and slidably mounted on the mould block 6. The plate may be actuated by arms depending from the first elevator, or by means of an extension 25 engaging a cam 22.
