To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN R. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Type or Matrices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to ing drawing.
My invention relates to type or matrices, and more particularly to that kind employed inmachines of the character illustrated in U. S. Letters Patent No. Ll36,532, to 0. Mergenthaler. In machines of this class the matrices are'stored in a magazine, are released therefrom by the manipulation of nger keys, are assembled in line, and then presented to a mold wherein the slug or linotype is cast. After'this, the matrices are deliveredto a distributing mechanism which restores the matrices to their proper places in the magazine from which they started. Generally speaking, as disclosed in said Letters Patent, or as employed in the commercial linotype machine, the matrices are 'formed with distributing combinations, and with ears whereby they are supported in their passage through the machine. These matrices vary in size according to the special characters they are intended to produce, and in the thicker ones the distributing combina# tions are ordinarily formed in a web of less thickness than that of the matrix body, and l the supporting ears are similarly of less than the body thickness. It has been customary to locate the web and ears at opposite sides of such thick matrices, the web at the rear side and the ears'at the forward side, and while this arrangement is entirely satisfactory for most purposes, it renders them disadvantageous for others. In the present instance, therefore, I have produced a matrix with both the ears and the combination web of less thickness than that of its body, but wherein both are located at the rear side of the matrix-and in substantially the same plane. As a consequence of this construction, and particularly in connection with the customary distributing devices, I secure certain valuable results, which proceed from the fact that the matrices may now be disengaged from their supporting means with their rear faces always in the same plane, irrespective of their thickness. By the term rear side, as herein employed, is meant that side of the matrix which during the travel of the latter through the distributing mechanism is the following one as distinguished from the leadingyone. In this connection,l it must be remembered that sometimes, or at certain stages ofthe circulation of the matrix through the machine, it travels otherwise than with the above indicated side rearmost, for instance, during composition, when such side is the leading one instead of the following one.
Referring to the' drawing: Figure 1 shows a matrix having my invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 shows a matrix of the kind now in use.
Referring to Fig. l, my improved matrix X is provided with the projecting ears X1 and the distributing toothed combination X2 formed in a thin web thereof, it being noted that the ears X1 and combination X.2 are located at the rear side of the matrix and in the same plane, or in other Words, at that side thereof which lies to the right of the formative character X3.
Fig. 2 illustrates the. form of matrix Y now in general use, having the ears Y1 and the distributing combination Y2 at opposite sides thereof, it being noted that the ears Y1 are located at the forward side vor at that side which lies to the left ofthe formative character Yi. "Ihe matrix Y is also formed l with a vertical recess Ya, which is designed to straddle the end of an overlying bar and thus permit the elevation of the matrix, when it is lifted into engagement with the distributer screws. 'Ihe necessity for this recess is entirely dispensed with in my im.
proved construction, and this feature constitutes one of its advantages.
I have shown my invention as applied to the particular form of matrix shown, but obviously it may be adapted to other forms as well without departure from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A type or matrix adapted for circulation in a typographical machine, wherein it travels in one direction during composition that of its body, and the said ears being located at that side of the type or matrix which in its normal position 1s the leading one during composition and the following lone during distribution.
2. A type or matrix adapted for circulation in a typographical machine, wherein it tray-els in one direction during composition and in the opposite direction during distribution, the said type or matrix bein formed with projecting bination, both of less thickness than that of its body and located in the'same plane and at that side thereof which in its normal position is the leading one during composition and the following one during distribution.
