Matrices.-Matrices for use in typographical composing and casting machines of the kind known under the Registered Trade Mark " Linotype " have the intaglio positive characters, from which a slug is cast, formed right-side-up, and positioned with reference to a datum line passing through the bases of the characters, to facilitate the mixing of matrices having different heights of character in the same composed line. Assembling matrices. -Matrices X having right-side-up characters are fed in turn to a clockwise rotating star wheel 4 by which they are pushed to the right into the assembler gate 5, the line abutting a finger 10 on a slide 9 with the characters facing rearwards. By pulling upwards a hand lever 19 keyed to a shaft 15, the gate 5 is lowered to the level of an intermediate channel 27 and the assembler elevator 6. The lever 19 is then moved to the left, its key 18 sliding along a keyway 17, whereupon by means of a link 22, slot 23 and pin 24, the pusher 25 is moved leftwards to eject the composed line into the assembler elevator. At the end of the stroke, a projection 29 on the pusher head 26 releases. a spring catch 28 to enable the assembler elevator to be raised to carry the line into position to be transferred for casting a slug. The link 22 also abuts the slide 9 or finger 10 and moves them into position for receiving the next line. The hand lever is then moved to the right to restore the pusher 25 to its original position, and then downwards to raise the gate 5 to receiving positions. The matrices are retained in upright position by flat steel springs 5a, 6a, 27a, in the gate, elevator and intermediate channel respectively.
