Abstract
243,437. Lanston Monotype Corporation, Ltd., (Lanston Monotype Machine Co.). Aug. 27, 1924. Moulds for type-casting machines. Relates to machines for casting typographical elements in the form of a fused strip, more particularly of I-section for use in " Multigraph " or like printing-machines. The mould comprises a channelled base member 13, Fig. 5, having an opening 16 to allow the metal-pot nozzle 60 to seat on a removable nozzle-plate 17. Upon the nozzle-plate rest two rebated type-blocks 19, 20, which form the sides of the mould, and receive between them a sliding mould-blade 21, Fig. 4, of corresponding form. The type-blocks are adjustable laterally by means of screwed plungers 24. Upon the type-blocks rest matrix-blocks 25, 26 having a cut-out portion to receive and guide a matrix 28. Lugs 29, 30 on the matrix-blocks are engaged by hooked portions on a matrix-, clamp 31, which is provided with a screw 32 for forming the matrix down on to the type-blocks. The mould-blade 21, Fig. 4, is secured to its carrier 37 by means of a lug 46, which fits a square aperture in the carrier. The carrier slides in a passage formed between the matrix-blocks, which are separated by distance-pieces 36<1>. The mould is cooled by means of waterways 47. the ends of which register with ports in the machine base 11. A friction clamp for gripping the ejected strip is located in a channelled block 51, and comprises a spring-pressed plunger and a cooperating abutment. Metal-pots. - The nozzle 60, Fig. 6, of the metal-pot has a central bore 61 terminating in angular branches 63, 64, so that the metal issuing from one branch washes against the previouslycast section in order to ensure fusion, whilst the metal from the other branch fills the rear of the mould. The nozzle has a vent 70, Fig. 8, which is partially closed by a plug 72, in order to facilitate the escape of air from the mould.
