542,311. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. May 24, 1941, No. 684. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1940. [Class 100 (iii)] Driving-mechanism.-A safety device which is operative for all the organs of the machine, is arranged to arrest the driving-mechanism in the case of an overload on the cam-shaft. The main driving-pulley 6, Fig. 3, is, as heretofore, adapted to be engaged by clutch-shoes 10, carried on the driving-shaft 7 and movable outwards to close the clutch by a spring 17 acting through a rod 14 and links 12. The rod 14 is controlled by a lever 20 and a starting-and-stopping bar 23. The pinion 27, which drives the cam-shaft, is not fast on the shaft 7, as usual, but is carried by a rod 28, which fits into the end of the shaft and is connected thereto by an inclined key 30, Fig. 4, located in a slot 32. The rod 28 is normally held in its outer position by a spring 34. In the event of an overload, the rod turns in the shaft 7, and, in its resulting endwise movement, acts through the rod 6, 14 to open the clutch.
