Abstract
676,040. Photographic type composing machines. INTERTYPE, Ltd. March 1, 1950 [March 11, 1949], No. 5172/50. Class 98 (i). [Also in Group XVI] In a photographic type-composing machine of the general construction described in Specification 590,553, a control member is provided co-operating with the driving means of the elevator which transports the matrices to a distributing station, and adapted to arrest the elevator at a predetermined position between the matrix-receiving and distributing stations, whereby the line of matrices is held stationary for identification. The control member arrests the elevator only if the composition of a succeeding line is unduly delayed. An additional pawl 20, Fig. 3, is provided on the linedelivery cam 7, which acts on the lever 8 to disengage the clutch and stop rotation of the cam-shaft 1 after about 265 degrees, when the elevator is at the predetermined identification position. At the same time the lug 37 closes an additional switch 29 in the circuit of the solenoid relay 26 for causing engagement of the clutch, in series with a control switch Z, Figs. 9 and 11, the arrangement being such that if the switch Z is closed before the pawl 20 reaches the lever 8, the relay 26 acts on arm 15 of lever 10, which deflects pawl 20 so that the elevator is not arrested. Actuation of either of the word-space keys 41, 42, Fig. 9, raises a vertical rod 60, Figs. 9 and 11, and closes the normallyopen switch Z. When the key is released, the switch remains closed, being pivoted at 64 between friction washers. If a word-space key is actuated in composing a line before the pawl 20 becomes operative, the elevator is therefore not arrested. When the line assembler C is raised for delivery of the completed line to the character-reproducing station, the switch Z is opened by means of a lever 66 and bar 69. When either key 41, 42 is depressed, a further key lever 55 or 57 is also actuated, by means of a lug 52 or 53 on a portion of a member 49 mounted on the shaft 43. According to the longitudinal position of the manually-operated member 49, the key lever 55 is actuated to release a thin spacer element of fixed thickness from the magazine A, or the lever 57 is actuated to release a thick spacer element. Specifications 14582/90, [Class 100], and 568,929 also are referred to.
