Assembling matrices; driving-mechanism.- In a typographical line-composing machine operated by an automatic tape control unit, the assembler shoot through which the matrices pass on their way to the assembler elevator comprises a lower guide-rail and a pivotally mounted upper finger, and an abnormal pivotal movement of the finger, caused by a pile-up of matrices in the shoot, actuates means to arrest the operation of the tape control unit. Clockwise pivotal movement of the finger 6 closes a switch 23 to energize a solenoid 25, whereupon a lever 18 moves against the tape-advancing shaft 12. A lug 19 on the shaft enters a hole in the lever 18 so shaped as to cause axial movement of the shaft to disengage a clutch and disassociate the shaft 12 from its drive-shaft.
